Why won't my AirPods 4 work on Teams or Zoom calls on my Windows 11 desktop?

I have AirPods 4 that have previously not had this issue-- but recently my speaker and microphone have not been working on all audio and video calls in Teams and Zoom. They work on connecting to audio in other parts of the computer, playing videos on the device and on my browser. Just not on calls.

Things I've tried:

  • Deleting the bluetooth device off my computer and putting it back on
  • Checking for updates on the driver
  • Disconnecting & forgetting the AirPods from my iPhone
  • Changing the computer audio input and output settings from Default to the headset

May be forgetting some things but please let me know if there's anything else I can try!

Have unpaired your AirPods and paired them again ?

    1. Go to Settings> Bluetooth & Devices> Devices> Click the AirPods> Remove
    2. Reset your AirPods to factory default:

    1. Pair them again

    Hi Stefano,

Thanks for providing these screenshots! Very helpful. My settings look the same as yours and they still don't work on a call.

    Hi Stefano,

Thank you for providing these insights! Unfortunately, manually selecting the device on Zoom and Teams did not solve this problem. Can you share how the AirPods can be recognized as a Headset and not Headphones? I'm not seeing the selections you've given in your instructions.

    Hi Caroline,

    Thank you for reaching out!

My name is Stefano and it’s my pleasure to assist you today.

Even if you’ve set your AirPods as the default audio device on Windows, Teams and Zoom have separate audio settings.

    In Teams:

    • Go to Settings > Devices.
    • Under Audio Devices, manually select your AirPods (make sure both the microphone and speakers are set to the AirPods).

    In Zoom:

    • Go to Settings > Audio.
    • Manually select your AirPods for Speaker and Microphone.

    Check if it works.

Besides, AirPods use two different Bluetooth profiles:

    • Stereo (Music/Media) for high-quality audio.
    • Hands-Free (Headset) for calls.

Windows sometimes might use the wrong profile.

    Proceed as follows:

    1. Right-click the sound icon in your taskbar and select “Sounds”.
    2. Go to the Playback tab. You should see two options for your AirPods:
    • Headphones (AirPods Stereo) — High-quality, but won’t work for calls.
    • Headset (AirPods Hands-Free AG Audio) — Works for calls, but at lower quality.
    1. Select the Headset version for calls.
    2. Do the same in the Recording tab and select the AirPods Hands-Free for the microphone.

If the problem persists, sometimes, a full AirPods reset helps.

    1. Put them in the case and leave the lid open.
    2. Hold the button on the back of the case until the light flashes amber, then white.
    3. Reconnect them to your Windows 11 device.

    Keep me posted.
