Keyboard does not work

System Specs:

  • Motherboard: MSI A68HM-E33 V2
  • BIOS Version: 8.5
  • Keyboard: USB (tested multiple devices and ports)
  • Boot Status: System reaches Windows Boot Manager but cannot proceed

The system powers on and reaches the Windows Boot Manager, but USB input devices do not function at all, making it impossible to enter BIOS or select an OS to boot. I have multiple operating systems installed, and manual selection is required via keyboard input, making the system completely unusable.

Symptoms:

  • USB keyboard receives power (onced blinked alot at start), but no input registers
  • DEL, F2, or any keys do not allow BIOS entry
  • Mouse and keyboard both unresponsive in Boot Manager
  • Monitor displays BIOS splash and OS boot menu normally
  • System stalls at OS selection screen due to lack of input
  • USB ports tested: front and rear (including rear USB 2.0)
  • No manual BIOS update or firmware changes were made recently

Troubleshooting Steps Performed:

  • CMOS Reset using JBAT1 jumper and full battery removal
  • RAM reseated
  • All front-panel USB/audio headers disconnected
  • Booted with only essential hardware: CPU, one RAM stick, monitor, USB keyboard
  • Hot-plugged USB keyboard after boot — still no input
  • OS and bootloader are functional, but selection is blocked due to non-working input

Thanks for the help. I’ve already tried using a wired USB keyboard. I haven’t used any wireless ones. I tested two different keyboards, and both did the same thing: the light blinked once at startup and then never blinked again, no matter what I did.

I haven’t tried a PS/2 keyboard yet since I don’t have one around, and there’s none nearby I can borrow. I’m really trying to get this PC fixed as soon as possible, so I’m doing everything I can with the tools I have.

    Hello ,

I’m here to help you in resolving your issue

Try a different USB keyboard or PS/2 to USB adapter to rule out the possibility of a faulty keyboard or port. If possible, use a wired keyboard, as wireless keyboards might not initialize properly in the boot phase.
