Windows Evergreen Model

Dear Microsoft,

I am writing to strongly advocate for a fundamental shift in the Windows operating system release strategy towards an Evergreen model, with Windows 11 serving as the continuously evolving platform for the foreseeable future.

The current cycle of major Windows releases every few years presents significant challenges and frustrations for users. These upgrades are often disruptive, time-consuming, and can lead to compatibility issues and the need to relearn aspects of the operating system.

I propose that Microsoft adopt a new approach where significant updates and new features are delivered as more manageable and less disruptive releases within the Windows 11 framework. This could be achieved through:

  • Maintaining "Windows 11" as the core brand for the long term.
  • Introducing major evolutionary steps as decimal point releases (e.g., Windows 11.1, Windows 11.2) or through significant feature updates identified by the "YYH2" (year and half-year of release) format.
  • Focusing on smaller, more frequent updates for ongoing improvements and security enhancements.

The benefits of this Evergreen model for both users and Microsoft are substantial:

For Users:

  • Elimination of Upgrade Fatigue: No more disruptive and time-consuming major OS upgrades.
  • Continuous Improvement: Regular delivery of new features and refinements without major upheaval.
  • Familiarity and Reduced Learning: Maintaining the "Windows 11" core reduces the need to constantly relearn the OS.
  • Long-Term Compatibility: Greater confidence in the longevity of their hardware and software investments.
  • Enhanced Security: Faster deployment of security patches through more frequent updates.
  • A Sense of Ongoing Progress: The OS constantly evolves without the stress of a complete version change.

For Microsoft:

  • More Efficient Resource Allocation: Focus development on a single, evolving platform.
  • Increased Customer Loyalty: A smoother and more user-friendly update process.
  • Potential for Subscription-Based Revenue: Aligns with modern software-as-a-service models.
  • Reduced Support Complexity: Streamlining support for a single, evolving platform.
  • Faster Adoption of New Technologies: Easier integration of advancements into the existing framework.
  • Stronger Developer Ecosystem: A stable and consistently evolving platform for application development.

By adopting this Evergreen model centered on Windows 11, Microsoft has the opportunity to create a more stable, secure, and user-friendly operating system that continuously improves without the disruption of traditional major releases. This approach would foster greater user satisfaction, streamline development efforts, and position Windows for long-term success in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

I urge Microsoft to seriously consider this shift towards an Evergreen model for the future of Windows.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
