Discord stream freezing and causing in game frame drops while playing geometry dash

After upgrading to windows 11, I have been perfectly fine until I hopped in a call with my friends and they wanted to watch me play, I go to screenshare my entire screen and it just freezes, the second i tab off of geometry dash it is fine, its only while on geometry dash while screen sharing my entire screen. I find the only fix for this is screensharing the actual application. Along with this, while the screenshare is frozen while screen sharing my entire screen my game will suddenly get a ton of frame drops and sometimes sudden freezes causing me to die mid way through a level

I have had this issue in the past but only far worse, my game would also get massive frame drops while not even in a call. The only fix I could find was returning back to windows 10

Now I could just go back to windows 10 again, while I think it is better I do like to keep my system up to date and I thought why not a better time than ever for an upgrade.

An addon to this is that the windows 11 24H2 update did not cause this, I had this issue before and half way through playing with my friends i decided to do the update to see if it would fix anything but instead it just stayed the same.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi there, not sure if you can help still but i tried the majority of your suggestions and no issues arises. However my issue still carries on.

One extra thing i tried was turning my RAM speed back down to the base of 4800 in case that was an issue. This did not change anything.

Another thing i would like to add is that when streaming Geometry Dash and having Roblox open in the background occasionally causes the same issue but now all the time, even while streaming the application. Not sure if you can assist with this but would be greatly appreciated

    Sorry for late reply again

Thanks for providing more information and sharing friend's experience.

    Here are further steps:

    • Update BIOS/UEFI andFirmware for other components
    • it's possible there's a subtle memory error. Run a memory test using a tool like Memtest86 to rule out any RAM issues.

Try reinstalling Geometry Dash, making sure to delete any remaining game files and folders after uninstalling.

-Microsoft's Process Monitor is a powerful tool that can capture detailed information about system activity. You could use it to try and pinpoint what happens when the freezing occurs. It requires some technical expertise to interpret the results.

-Run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag) to check for any errors related to DirectX, which Geometry Dash likely uses.

    -Reinstall Windows 11 if possible

-For a hardware-related issue, contacting AMD (for your CPU) and NVIDIA (for your GPU) support might be helpful. They might have insights into specific compatibility issues.

If you need further assistance or if any of these steps are unclear, please let me know.

Hi there, sorry for the late reply.

I have tried doing the two steps that you recommend above however none came out successful. The issue still exists.

May I add that I see you said it may have something to do with how windows 11 handles focus and resource allocations. I find this strange of how I have other friends who upgraded to windows 11 around the same time and they have had no issues, no settings changed and left completely default both of times that I have upgraded to windows 11 on this computer i have had this issue. I would also like to add how this only happens on geometry dash, not other Fullscreen/Fullscreen borderless games.

As I have this issue and my friends don't, it wouldn't be anything related to hardware by chance? This is highly unlikely as i see other people have the same issue but they have had no luck fixing either.

    Many thanks

Very sorry to hear about your issues with your system. I will be happy to help you out today.

The fact that the stream works fine when Geometry Dash is visible but not focused strongly suggests a conflict related to how Windows 11 handles focus and resource allocation, specifically with fullscreen borderless windowed mode and Discord screen capture.

Below are some troubleshooting steps based on your information:

    1. Windows 10 and 11 have a feature called Focus Assist (formerly Quiet Hours) that minimizes distractions. It is possible this is interfering. Make sure Focus Assist is turned off.
    2. The Windows Game Bar cause conflicts with games and streaming software. Disable it completely in Windows settings (Gaming > Game Bar).
    3. Windows has a feature called <Fullscreen Optimizations">to improve performance in fullscreen games. ...can sometimes cause issues. Try disabling it for Geometry Dash: * Right-click the Geometry Dash executable. * Go to Properties > Compatibility. * Check <Disable fullscreen optimizations.>
    4. Sometimes, DPI scaling conflicts can cause strange behavior with fullscreen borderless windowed mode. Try this: * Right-click the Geometry Dash executable. * Go to Properties > Compatibility > Change high DPI settings. * Check "Override high DPI scaling behavior." * Select "Application" in the dropdown menu.
    5. Performing a clean boot can help identify if a background service or startup program is interfering. This starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and programs: * Search for "msconfig" in the Windows search bar and open System Configuration. * Go to the Services tab. * Check "Hide all Microsoft services." * Click "Disable all." * Go to the Startup tab. * Click "Open Task Manager." * Disable all startup programs. * Restart your computer. * Test the streaming. If it works, systematically re-enable services and startup programs to pinpoint the culprit.

If you need further assistance or if any of these steps are unclear, please let me know.

Hi there, after doing the In-Place Upgrade I still see the issue that I have been having.

One thing I will add is I tested to stream my entire screen and opened geometry dash and turned on Fullscreen Borderless Mode, while being focused on the game the issue was still there, stream completely frozen sometimes catching up then freezing again. However with the game open and not focused on the application but due to borderless mode the game stayed on the screen I saw after a couple of seconds the stream was absolutely fine, running fine not frozen but only while I wasn't focused on the game. Not sure if this helps but if you have any other solutions for me then that would be excellent

    Many Thanks
