Can’t Adjust Brightness

Hello Support Team,

I’m using a desktop PC running Windows 11 Pro, and I’m trying to adjust the brightness of my external monitor. Most support articles seem to focus on laptops with built-in displays, but I’m on a desktop setup with a regular monitor connected via HDMI.

Here’s with what I’m dealing:

  • There’s no brightness slider at all under Settings > System > Display.
  • I can adjust brightness manually using the monitor’s physical OSD buttons, but I’d prefer something easier and faster.
  • I’ve seen mentions of things like adaptive brightness or content-based brightness changes, but I’m not sure if those apply to external monitors or desktop setups.

Things I’ve already tried:
✔ No slider available in Windows Settings.
✔ No useful options in the NVIDIA/Intel graphics control panels.
✔ Windows detects the monitor fine, and it's connected via HDMI.

Important: I’m trying to avoid using third-party tools or apps. I'm looking for a native Windows solution (or at least something Microsoft recommends).

The questions of all questions is:

Is there any way to control the brightness of an external monitor from Windows directly on a desktop setup, without using third-party software?

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

There is no native solution to this in Windows 11, the brightness settings in Windows only work on laptops, if you have a PC with external monitor, then you can only adjust the brightness using the OSD buttons on the monitor.

If the method that Shawn has provided also does not meet your needs, the OSD controls are the only available option.

The external display should have a button or OSD menu like in option 1 to adjust its brightness level.

    Hello,

I wanted to provide some feedback regarding your suggestion to adjust brightness using the GPU control panel (in my case, NVIDIA). While I understand that this method is commonly recommended, I’ve noticed that it does not effectively resolve my issue. Specifically, when I make changes to the brightness settings via the GPU control panel, the results are quite extreme. The display becomes either significantly darker or excessively bright, and the overall image quality is compromised.

These changes also appear to alter color accuracy and contrast in a way that is not desirable, especially for tasks that require precise visual clarity. My intention was to make a subtle and balanced adjustment to the brightness level, not to drastically change the tone or color rendering of the display. Unfortunately, the GPU settings seem to affect the color filters more than the actual luminance.

As such, this method does not provide a satisfactory solution. I believe a more suitable approach would be either an adjustment directly through the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) menu or via Windows’ built-in brightness controls — though the latter is often unavailable on desktop setups with external monitors.

If you have any alternative recommendations that preserve both image fidelity and achieve balanced brightness control, I’d be quite happy to hear them.

    Hello Deshawn,

In addition, you should also be able to use and available option 1, 8, 9, or 10 in the tutorial below to adjust the display brightness of an external monitor on a desktop PC in Windows 11.
