Problem with Windows 11 update 24H2

I'm having trouble with the microsoft update 24H2 for windows 11. The install gets to 98% then says something went wrong and tries to unwind.

It then tries to repeat the whole episode. I've tried running DISM restorehealth and it says my system is OK. What can I do please? How do I get out of this? Can anyone help? Thanks.

    Hi Tom

Like you i was getting frustrated, and although i was given lots of advice none of it seemed to work, and some seemed very complicated to do. So i consulted Microsoft and the agent’s advice was to do a clean install of Windows which need not affect your files or apps. It would lead to a clean uptodate copy with any corrupted or missing files sorted out. The agent took over my PC and showed me how it was done. You simply go to the MS website and look for the version of W11 you want - home/pro etc. within an hour or so the problem was solved. The worst part was the queue waiting for an agent to come free. I would recommend it if you are struggling.

    Mike

Thanks both of you for the replies which didn't seem to solve the problem. So in the end I downloaded the latest version of W11 from the Microsoft website, made sure my files and apps were preserved and reinstalled W11. It all took a bit of time but in the end it seems to have solved the problem.

Frustrating but I think I'm OK now.

None of the above has any relevance, the problem is due winupdate settings and the user updating from wrong sources

24H2 is an optional update not critical and as such under the default win update settings it would not have been installed, unless manually installed.

Win11 by default only installs critical security updates, unless you made the mistake of selecting “Get latest updates” which includes drivers.

See your laptop/PC makers support to update both bios and ALL drivers.

There should be a shortcut to that makers update utility on your system.

Then set Bios to defaults & Pwr to balanced. At the end of the day shutdown, do not leave in sleep.

Do NOT update from any other source inc Device Manager

You only need to set the Advanced options for notify & Time, then leave win update to do its own thing.

Updated drivers/bios via Dell support site specific to your tag#?

They even have a diagnostics utility

    Hello ,

I’m here to help you in resolving your issue

Make sure you have at least 25–30GB of free space on your system drive (C:). Big updates need breathing room, even if the files look smaller at first.

    Use Windows Update Troubleshooter

    1. Press Win + I > Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters
    2. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
    3. Reboot and try updating again

    Clear Windows Update Cache :

    1.Press Win + R, type:

    services.msc

    1. Stop these services:

    Windows Update

    Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

    1. Now go to:

    C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

and delete all files inside (don’t worry, they’ll be recreated).

    1. Start the services again, or just restart the PC.

After trying above steps, please reach out to me if you have any doubts or issues
