When I wake my PC from sleep mode, it doesn't ask me to sign in again. Also, when I turn off Windows Hello and turn it to 'every time', on that method also it doesn't work.

    Thanks for the update, Deepak!

Since you're using Windows 11 Home, Group Policy Editor isn't available by default. We can still fix this by adjusting your power and registry settings. Here's what to try next:

1: Enable Password on Wake via Registry Editor

Note: Be very careful when editing the registry; incorrect changes can cause system issues.

Just in case something goes wrong, back up your important files (documents, photos, etc.) to an external drive or cloud storage.

    Create a System Restore Point

This lets you roll back your PC to its current state if the registry edit causes problems.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/sys...

If you are comfortable proceeding, here's how you can check it.

Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter.

    Navigate to this path:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Power\PowerSettings\0e796bdb-100d-47d6-a2d5-f7d2daa51f51

If the path doesn’t exist, you’ll need to create it manually:

Right-click on the parent folder and select New > Key for each part of the path.

Once at the final folder, right-click in the right pane > New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

    Name it: ACSettingIndex

Set its value to 1 (this enables password requirement on wake).

Repeat and add DCSettingIndex with a value of 1 (for battery mode).

Restart your PC to apply the changes.

    Create Missing Keys

    ________________

Right-click on Microsoft, choose New > Key, and name it: Power

Right-click on Power, choose New > Key, name it: PowerSettings

Right-click on PowerSettings, choose New > Key, name it: 0e796bdb-100d-47d6-a2d5-f7d2daa51f51

    Add the Required Values

Now in the right pane of the final key, do the following:

Right-click in the empty space > New > DWORD (32-bit) Value > Name it:

    ACSettingIndex

Double-click it, set the value data to 1, and click OK.

    Repeat for:

    DCSettingIndex

Set its Value data to 1 as well.

ACSettingIndex = 1 → Requires password on wake when plugged in

DCSettingIndex = 1 → Requires password on wake when on battery

Once added, restart your PC to apply the changes.

Step 2: Check Advanced Power Settings

Press Windows + S, type Edit power plan, and select it.

    Click Change advanced power settings.

    In the Power Options window:

Expand Require a password on wakeup

Set both On battery and Plugged in to Yes

    Click Apply > OK.

Step 3: Confirm Sign-in Requirement in Settings Again

    Just to double-check:

Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.

Under "If you've been away, when should Windows require you to sign in again?", ensure it's set to Every time or "When PC wakes up from sleep."

Also check that Windows Hello is not overriding behavior.

Hope that helps! Please let me know if you have questions with the steps. I am here to help you all the way.

    Best regards,

    Adrian A.

    Hello Deepak,

Thanks for describing your situation. I’m Adrian, an Independent Advisor. It sounds like your PC is skipping the sign-in screen after sleep, even when you've set it to require a password. This is often related to either a misconfigured setting or a group policy override. Let’s walk through a few steps to fix it:

Step 1: Check Sign-in Settings in Windows

Press Windows + I to open Settings.

Go to Accounts > Sign-in options.

Under "If you've been away, when should Windows require you to sign in again?", make sure it’s set to "Every time".

If this option keeps resetting or is greyed out, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Edit Local Group Policy (Windows 11 Pro or higher)

If you’re using Windows 11 Home, skip this step.

Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and hit Enter.

    Navigate to:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Power Management > Sleep Settings

Double-click Require a password when a computer wakes (plugged in) and (on battery).

    Set both to Enabled.

    Click Apply > OK.

Let me know how it goes after these steps. If it’s still not working, we’ll get it sorted together. We can check other settings like modifying the registry or power plan settings.

    Best regards,

    Adrian A

Hello again, That's Interesting! Thanks for your response. To ensure this isn’t a restriction, kindly confirm the details below.

    1. Press Windows + R, type winver, hit Enter.

Provide your Windows version and edition (e.g., Windows 11 Pro, version 23H2)

    1. And if your Windows is fully activated.

Go to: Settings > System > Activation

    Confirm: "Windows is activated."

If it’s not activated, or you're on a custom/unofficial version, these options might not work as expected.

    1. Computer make and model?
    2. Could you confirm if the device is being managed by a work or school organization?

Click on Start > Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.

If you see any account listed that says 'Connected to [organization name]', or a message saying 'This device is managed by your organization', then your PC is being managed.

Looking for your reply. Thank you.

    Adrian A

There is no option in advanced power setting named as 'require a password on wakeup'. Also there is no option named in 'when PC wakes up from sleep'. I need that option in that box menu.Image
