Hello Dan! Thank you so much for reaching out, I am Tin, an independent advisor, and I am glad to assist you today with this issue. From what you describe, sudden lag spikes in Minecraft Bedrock after two years of stable performance could be caused by several common culprits that have nothing to do with your hardware aging. Since you’ve already tried some solid steps (reinstalling the game, lowering settings, clearing cache, etc.) Here are some steps to get the issue resolved.
*Check background processes and memory pressure, even if Minecraft used to run fine, a background app or system process might be causing new stuttering. Use Task Manager, while the game is running, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc and go to the Performance tab. Then look for CPU spikes (especially to 100%), Disk usage hitting 100%, Memory usage high (>80%). Then go to the Processes tab and sort by “CPU” or “Disk” to see if something else is interfering.
*Check thermal throttling, your laptop might be thermally throttling now due to dust buildup or degraded cooling performance.
* Check storage health, you mentioned freeing up space is a good move. But storage health is another issue, if your SSD/HDD is failing or has bad sectors, loading chunks in Minecraft can cause lag spikes.
*Disable V-Sync / Use FPS cap, sometimes enabling V-Sync or uncapped FPS can lead to stutters. Try setting FPS cap to 60 or 120 if it’s too high or uncapped. Disabling V-Sync or enabling it (try both depending on current state).
*Disable Windows Game Mode / Xbox Game Bar, game Mode and Xbox Game Bar often cause microstuttering, especially in recent Windows updates. Go to Settings > Gaming > Game Mode → Turn Off. And go to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar → Turn Off. Also turn off any background recording or overlays (NVIDIA, AMD, Xbox, Discord).
*World Corruption or Chunk Errors, if this only happens in one specific world, the save may be corrupted or bloated. Try to create a new world and testing performance. If the lag is only in your main world, consider exporting it and using MCCToolChest PE or Universal Minecraft Editor to clean it.
*Check for any system changes around 3 days ago.
