Changing date of music files using bulk file changer isn't working in Windows

I've used the bulk file changer on Windows 10 for a few years, but I it doesn't appear to work with Win. 11.

I deleted it and tried to reinstall it, which worked ok but there's no content (empty). I've tried again on several occasions including restarting my computer with same result

I like the app because it's simple to use which suits me very well and would appreciate a "simple" suggestion on how to rectify the problem, if there is one, please.

    Hello Maurice!

My apologies for getting back to this late. You've done a great job in describing where you at. So, NirSoft tools can be confusing because they’re so minimal and don’t install like typical apps. Let’s walk through this step-by-step, I’ll keep it as simple and clear as possible.

    Download BulkFileChanger

    • You’ll need to download the tool again, directly from the official NirSoft website.

Here is the link for your reference: https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/bulk_file_changer...

    • Scroll down a bit until you see “Download BulkFileChanger (32-bit version)”
    • Click the link: Download BulkFileChanger (BulkFileChanger.zip)

This will download a small ZIP file (usually to your Downloads folder)

    Extract the Files

    • Open your Downloads folder
    • Find the file called BulkFileChanger.zip
    • Right-click it and choose Extract All…
    • Choose a location like your Desktop or Documents, then click Extract

This will create a new folder with the actual program inside.

    Run BulkFileChanger

    • Open the folder you just extracted
    • Right-click the file named: BulkFileChanger.exe
    • Select Run as administrator
    • If you get a warning from SmartScreen, click "More info" then "Run anyway"

You should now see the program open. It will look a bit old-fashioned but that’s normal.

    Load Your Music Files

The program opens empty by default. Now to load your files:

    • Click the File menu > Add Files or press Ctrl + F
    • Navigate to the folder where your music files are stored (e.g. MP3 files)
    • Select the files and click Open

They should now appear in the list.

To also mention, some Windows 11 versions hide the Compatibility tab. But don’t worry—you usually don’t need it for BulkFileChanger. It works fine without any special compatibility settings, especially if you use the 32-bit version.

    Hope this helps,

    Yvette

    Hello Maurice,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community Forum. Looks like you are dealing with Permission and Compatibility Conflicts. Windows 11 has stricter security controls compared to Windows 10, which can interfere with older tools like BulkFileChanger.

Most common issues are you can't access or modify file metadata; prevents files from being loaded or changed; app still works, but some features silently fail. Have you tired to run BulkFileChanger as Administrator and set Compatibility Mode to Windows 10?

Just in case, this is how to do it:

    > Right-click on BulkFileChanger.exe

    > Select Properties

    > Go to the Compatibility tab

    > Check Run this program in compatibility mode for: and choose Windows 10

    > Check Run this program as an administrator

    > Click Apply and then OK

    > Now, right-click the app and choose “Run as administrator” to launch it

-This simple step resolves permission issues and compatibility glitches on Windows 11, allowing the app to correctly load files and change file dates. If still doesn't work, check and temporarily disable Controlled Folder Access or add BulkFileChanger as an allowed app in Windows Security.

    Hope this helps,

Hi Yvette, No apologies necessary. I'm sorry if I gave you the impression I may have been in a hurry.

In my opinion you have been very prompt with your replies; and very, very informative.

Thanks a lot Yvette. I don't have the Bulk File Changer on my laptop now because I couldn't get it to work, so deleted it.

I wasn't even sure where I should download it from, if indeed I did need to download it? I used the Nirsoft program/app, very confusing and am wondering if that was correct?

You've instructed me to right click on BulkFileChanger.exe? I don't have it, much less know where or how to get it.

I'm sorry but I do understand basically what you've told me; I just need a little more information/clarity please.

Also, I don't think my version of Windows 11 has a Compatibility tab in "Properties" but I can work around that.
