In my Onedrive personal account, I cannot open files that are not downloaded. See error message.

I have two more Onedrive accounts from work which work well.

Please help!

Previous question here a few years ago does not resolve the issue, it just has some generic advise on how to reinstall and reset onedrive. I have done all those steps mentioned.

Hello Kostas, this is Arlene, an Independent Advisor. Thanks for the detailed follow-up this definitely helps narrow things down.

Regarding the error 0x8007017C, it typically appears when Windows cannot access online-only files due to an issue with the Windows Cloud Files Filter Driver (cldflt.sys) a system component OneDrive relies on for Files On-Demand.

A few things to try that often resolve this issue:

Re-enable the Cloud Files Filter Driver:

    Open Command Prompt as Administrator.

    Type:

    reg add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CldFlt" /v Start /t REG_DWORD /d 2 /f

    Then restart your computer.

Ensure OneDrive sync is properly linked to your signed-in Windows account try signing out and back into OneDrive if necessary.

Since you're seeing only the options "Free up disk space" and "Download all files," the new Files On-Demand UI seems to have streamlined older toggles which might require a full download as a workaround for now.

Let me know if you're comfortable trying the registry command above. Happy to guide you further!

    Regards,

    Arlene D.

    Hello Marc,

Thank you so much for helping.

1/ yes, the files have the cloud icon next to them. I can neither open them, nor download them on my device when I right click > Always keep on this device.

2/ I noticed this suggestion online to switch on/off Files on Demand. However, the current versions of onedrive and/or windows 11 do not have this option (I have downloaded all latest windows updates). When I go to onedrive Settings > Sync and backup > Advanced settings > Files On-Demand, I have two options: "Free up disk space" and "Download all files". See image below.

    StartFragment

I have not tried to Download all files yet, as they are several Gb.

    EndFragment

3/ Yes, the files open without a problem on the web, proving they are not corrupt.

Hello there, Kostas! Marc here, and thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community Forums. I am here to help.

When you state "files that are not downloaded," are these files expressly labeled with the cloud icon (indicating that they are 'online-only' and do not take up space on your computer)?

Have you tried briefly turning off and back on the "Files On Demand" setting? You can usually discover this by right-clicking the OneDrive cloud icon in your taskbar and selecting Settings > Sync and backup tab > Advanced settings > Files On-Demand.

Web Access Confirmation - Can you successfully log in to your personal OneDrive account using a web browser (onedrive.live.com) and open the same online-only files? This confirms that the files themselves are not corrupted in the cloud.

Once I have this information, I will be able to propose more targeted solutions to this specific and recurrent issue.

    Looking forward to your response.

    Best,
