Why does Overwatch 2 only crash on steam?

Hi

Some time ago I requested help on the forum because overwatch 2 just started crashing suddenly

a really kind man helped me understand the problem and we came to the conclusion that the problem is on blizzards end

but after trying the game on blizzard again instead of steam I have found out that it doesn't crash on the blizzard launcher

and I don't understand why it crashes on the steam launcher

please help! (sorry for bad english)

    Hello Verga,

    You may proceed to these advance troubleshooting steps.

    Check the Overwatch Shortcut in Steam

    In Steam, go to your Library and right-click Overwatch 2 > Properties

    • Under Target, make sure the path points to:"C:\Program Files (x86)\Overwatch\Overwatch.exe"

    (or wherever the game is actually installed)

    • Remove any extra commands after the path
    • Set Overwatch to Run as Administrator

    Go to the folder where Overwatch is installed

    • Right-click Overwatch.exe > Properties
    • Click the Compatibility tab
    • Check: “Run this program as an administrator”
    • Click Apply → OK

    Try launching Overwatch 2 through Steam again after this. Let me know if it still crashes. :)

    Well after trying out both methods, it still crashes sadly about 15-20 minutes after launch

Based on the issue you mentioned, Overwatch 2 crashes only on Steam likely because of conflicts introduced by Steam's overlay, incorrect launch settings, or missing admin permissions. These issues don’t affect the Battle.net launcher, which launches the game in its native environment without extra layers that could cause crashes.

    The only main resolution I see here is to disable the Steam Overlay and run Steam as Administrator when launching Overwatch 2. Also, make sure the game shortcut in Steam points to the correct Overwatch.exe with no extra launch options.

    Disable the Steam Overlay

    • Open Steam
    • Go to your Library
    • Right-click on Overwatch 2 (the shortcut you added)

    Click Properties

    • In the General tab, uncheck: “Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game”

    Run Steam as Administrator

    • Close Steam completely
    • Right-click on the Steam shortcut on your desktop or Start menu
    • Click Run as administrator.
