Dear Microsoft Support Team,

I hope you’re doing well. I’m reaching out to express a pressing concern regarding Windows 11’s management of shared GPU memory, specifically the way it allocates 50% of system RAM to integrated graphics by default. In my case, this means that 24 GB out of my 48 GB RAM is reserved as shared GPU memory, even when I’m running standard productivity and web applications. This default behavior has led to persistent memory contention between GPU needs and background or non-graphics-related processes.

🛑 The Core Issue

  • Windows automatically allocates up to 50% of system RAM as shared GPU memory, regardless of actual usage superuser.com.
  • Even when the GPU isn't heavily utilized, this memory remains disallowed for system use, affecting application performance.
  • I’ve examined BIOS/UEFI configurations—there is no option to adjust or cap this allocation.
  • I’ve tried registry tweaks (e.g., DedicatedSegmentSize under HKLM\Software\Intel\GMM) but they only falsely report value changes, with no real effect superuser.com+1reddit.com+1superuser.com+1superuser.com+1.

🚫 Why This is Unacceptable

  1. Wasted Resources: With 24 GB locked, high-demand apps like TradingView run sluggishly due to lack of free RAM.
  2. Lack of Control: Users have zero agency to reduce this allocation—even setting a cap like 4 GB would help immensely.
  3. Poor UX: The current system feels rigid and outdated, especially given today’s robust hardware.

✅ What I’m Suggesting

Please introduce a user-configurable option in Windows that allows:

  • Capping shared GPU memory, for example at 4 GB or 8 GB
  • Ideally exposed via Settings > System > Display & Graphics for easy user access

This would restore control to power users with substantial RAM, enhance performance for non-graphics workloads, and align Windows 11 with user expectations for customizability.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this request. I’d be happy to assist further or participate in testing improvements related to shared memory allocation.

Looking forward to your response and hopeful for a positive change.

Best regards,
-Vikrant

    Good day!

Welcome to Microsoft Community. Thank you for sharing your concern with us today and we hope that all is well. Thank you for reaching out to us with your concern regarding shared GPU memory allocation in Windows 11. I understand the importance of having control over system resources for optimal performance.

At this time, Windows 11 does not provide a built-in option to adjust shared GPU memory allocation beyond the default 50% of system RAM. While BIOS/UEFI configurations and registry tweaks may not offer a solution, I recommend keeping your system updated with the latest Windows updates as Microsoft continually works on enhancing user experience and addressing feedback.

I appreciate your feedback and suggestion for a user-configurable option to cap shared GPU memory allocation in Windows 11. Your input is valuable to us, and I will ensure that your feedback is forwarded to the relevant team for consideration in future updates.

If you have any other questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

    Regards,
    Fritz-Bald
