Location Services Disabled and Grayed out in Windows 11 24H2
I am my own admin on private machine. Nothing works to turn it on
I have check Services and geolocation is "on" but still nothing will allow me to turn on location services.
I use Windows Defender as my anti virus -- so it is not a third party anti-virus programme.

2025-05-07T05:01:40+00:00 This was the fix for my Windows 11 machine.
Press Win + R, type regedit and press Enter.
In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\LocationAndSensors
Make sure the following values are set correctly:
DisableLocation: should be set to 0 or deleted (if it exists).
Disclaimer: Modifying the registry or workgroup is usually for advanced users, administrators and IT professionals. It can help fix some problems. However, improper registry modification may cause serious problems. Therefore, please follow the steps below carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before modifying it. 2024-12-08T12:56:40+00:00 Dear tommyzulu!
Welcome to the Microsoft Community!
I understand the location service issue you are experiencing on Windows 11 24H2. This is indeed a frustrating situation, especially when you as an administrator cannot enable it. Let's try some solutions:
- Create a new user account:
- First, let's create a new user account to check if the problem is with the current user configuration:
To do so, right-click Start->Terminal/PowerShell/Command prompt (Admin), and enter the following commands:
net user user1 pass1 /add net localgroup administrators user1 /add(Replace "user1" and "pass1" with the username and password of the new user.)
After creating the user, reboot the computer, select the new user, and log in. See whether the issue persists.
Check if the location service is available in the new account. If it is normal in the new account, there may be a problem with your current user configuration.
- Check the registry:
- Open the Registry Editor (regedit)
- Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\location
- Make sure "Value" is set to "Allow"
Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click How to back up and restore the registry in Windows - Microsoft Support to view the article.
- Roll back the update:
If the issue occurred after a recent update, you can try rolling back to a previous version:
- Settings > System > Recovery > Go back to a previous version
- Feedback Hub:
If none of the above work, we recommend that you report the issue to Microsoft through Feedback Hub:
- Open the Feedback Hub app
- Submit new feedback with a detailed description of the issue you encountered
- Check privacy settings:
- Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Location
- Make sure "Allow access to location on this device" is turned on
- Update drivers:
- Check and update all drivers that may be related to location services, especially network and GPS drivers
If it still doesn't work, it is recommended that you use an ISO to overwrite the installation to check whether the problem is caused by the corruption of the system configuration files related to location services.
Disclaimer: It is recommended that you can repair the system directly through the ISO file. This is not a reinstallation of the system. It will repair your system and will not delete files or applications. But if there is important data in the computer, we still recommend backing it up in advance.
Once the backup is completed, follow the steps in the guide below:
Visit the following site and click Download ISO for x64-bit devices.
-Download Windows 11 Download the ISO image of your language and run it
-When the ISO file is downloaded, double-click it to open it and run setup.exe
-Select "Not now" on the "Get updates, drivers and optional features" page.
-Next Confirm your files and applications. The settings are retained. It will also show you the version of Windows it will install.
If you are required to enter a key, it means that the ISO you downloaded does not match your current system version.
- On the Choose what to keep page, select Keep files and apps.
- Click Install to start the non-destructive repair.
Please note that I personally have location services working properly on Windows 11 24H2, so this may be a problem specific to your system.
If none of these steps solve the problem, you may want to consider reinstalling Windows. If you need any help with these steps or have any questions, please feel free to let me know.
Thank you for your understanding and support!
