I bought a new computer 2 weeks ago and I have 2 issues. I have no idea if one has to do with the other, but I will ask, and you can tell me what you think.
- I let an electronics store transfer what data they could save from my Windows 10 PC. I changed the user settings so that it says my name at start up but when I go into File Explorer, my main path is: C:\Users\Owner instead of C:\Users\myname\ It says myname in User Accounts, (I am Admin) Home and when I do %userprofile% so I called the store (coincidently, I used to work for them as a sales consultant) and I asked why it said Owner and they said, "We're not allowed to transfer user data." That makes no sense at all. If they can transfer the usual folders: Docs, Pics, etc. Why can't/didn't they make it my name instead of Owner. There was also something I noticed in the Users properties called UnknownAccount. When I asked about that, they said, "It happens with data transfers don't worry about it." I said, because you guys (often) do remote support, someone could use UnknownAccount as a back door, and they replied, "It's not a back door, don't worry..."
Now I'm a reasonably tech-savvy person and I have owned a Windows PC since I was 8 and I am very beyond 8 now, but I let all that slide until:
- So now I'm on 11 and I'm getting used to it, however, if I had $1 USD for every time Edge has randomly froze on me, I'd be swimming in a pile of money like Scrooge McDuck from the Disney cartoon, "Duck Tales"
11 has been out for a long while now and I keep it updated, but this is nuts. My system is a beast, I7, 4070 Super, 32 RAM, there is no reason why Edge should be freezing like this unless it has to do with the first issue somehow. It freezes with 4 tabs open, <smh>
Things I have tried:
- Creating a Restore Point
- Examining the registry for any mention of a user specifically called Owner including in SID's through Command Prompt as Administrator
- Youtube videos - I searched: "change Owner to username" only returns results about how to take or change ownership of a file or folder in File Explorer
- Looking at the registry for all instances of WindowsNT Current Version because in YouTube videos it shows people on multiple channels having a bunch of registry keys there but mine only has the one default key which I find incredibly strange.
The only settings I have changed in the registry have to do with drives and drive letters appearing twice in File Explorer. That is annoying too, also not something that should happen with a 4-year-old OS that gets updates. A patch or hotfix could have solved that long ago. Please, don't make users have to do things that should have been caught by well-paid developers. I was scared to have to do that - yes, I made a restore point but if that had gone south, restore points take an hour or more to roll back.
If there is no way to get my C:\Users\Owner to change to C:\Users\myname I can live with it, but it makes for confusing troubleshooting using videos sometimes, but I cannot abide Edge freezing with 4 tabs open. I did not drop a chunk of money on a beast of a rig used for filmmaking to have Edge freeze on me with 4 tabs open in 2025. That is a release day sort of issue, not one when an OS is 4 years old and the more than adequate system is only 2 weeks old.
And please, I implore you, don't just say, "If Edge is freezing, use Chrome." That isn't an acceptable fix.
Sorry to come off salty but this really should not be happening. Thank you for your understanding, patience, and time.
