    You cannot join the online multiplayer servers, you can play multi-player locally between two players on a home network, provided only one of the players is on the trial version

    But I saw that multi-player is possible with the exception that only one demo player can join the game since the default name cannot be changed. Is that true?

    That is currently not possible, the public multi-player servers are not accessible during the free trial period of Minecraft.
