Task host is stopping background tasks

Hello,

For a few weeks now I've had issues with Windows (many issues).

I am not a tech expert, but I believe one issue in particular is the root of all the problems.

Task host window is interfering with shut down or restart and each time I want to perform one of this two operation I get the following message (see image below at the end of the question).

Now, before I came here, I have browsed every single solution offered here and on other sites, and none of them worked. Here are a few examples of solutions that didn't worked : https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/when-i-am-shutting-down-my-pc-i-am-getting-a-pop/9c5530d4-341f-4774-95db-42f4dea6a9c6https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/2223524/how-can-i-fix-task-host-window-preventing-shutdown

Also, I have checked if there are any applications working in the background, and there are none.

Since this issue appeared in itself, I've had a series of others problems :

  • Windows update is not working (not even loading) through settings,
  • Cannot access Microsoft store (it is either loading for a long time or frozen and I have to force closure of the app through Task manager)
  • Windows outlook is not working. I have been trying to uninstall and install again the app without success. I couldn't access my account and was asked to sign in each time. Here another problem in itself : at sign in outlook claim it will send a code to my email, but I never receive the code AND I have configured my account to send a code to a different mail. But it systematically wants to send a code to my very own mail (which I never receive).

I have also tried to restore my computer to an earlier restoration point, when everything was running smooth...didn't change a thing and I am also afraid it made things worse.

Here are a few technical characteristics :

ASUS Vivobook X1504VA

Windows 11 Home edition

Version 24H2

64 bit operating system

Oh, and cherry on the top : in order to asked this question, I needed to sign in to my account. Soooo many issues to sign in : many errors messages, microsoft wanted to send a code to my email which I never receive...

I would really appreciate any help, I am desperate to find a solution, a new one and not one that I already tried several times with no success. And honestly, with so many issues I am not sure what is the cause of it, what is not and what do I need to do.

    Hi,

I appreciate your Chand fully and clear explanation. I am really sorry you had to go through this. It is a nightmare scenario that no one should experience regarding his device and Microsoft account. Let's break it down into what you can do to avoid this from happening again and get things back on track.

PART 1: ACCOUNT LOCKOUT + OFFLINE DEVICE.

This is what happens when Windows couldn't authenticate with Microsoft servers; special cases are devices that use a Microsoft account to login, but:

There is no internet on boot.

Or there are sync/authentication issues with your account (e.g., outdated credentials, password changed elsewhere).

FIX: Visit Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Password and add a local account backup (with a password you know). This will serve as a backup in case your Microsoft login gives you troubles once again.

Enable auto sign-in to Wi-Fi in your settings so you can never be offline on boot.

Keep offline login enabled: Go to Settings > Accounts > Your Info, and confirm your account is verified. Then try to log in once with a good connection so that your PC stores proper offline credentials.

    PART 2: MISSING VERIFICATION CODES

Now when Microsoft states that it is sending something to that very email you are trying to log in to, it means you are stuck and cannot retrieve anything. Thus they assume you have access to that email but you do not.

    ***Fix for Not Receiving Codes:

Log-in recovery steps (from a browser):

    Try from here: https://account.live.com/proofs/manage

In Security Info, add an alternate email or phone (one that you control and can receive codes on).

Use the recovery form if above doesn't work:

    https://account.live.com/acsr

This is sort of an ultimate resort form. Also, be patient; it may take 24-48 hours sometimes.

PART 3: ISSUES WITH THE OUTLOOK APP (NOT SYNCING, INBOX STUCK)

In case Outlook is not reaching complete connectivity after doing a fresh Windows install, the following are the probable reasons:

Mail zervice is not active in Windows,

The app is not given proper permissions, and

Account settings are not authenticated properly.

    **Steps to Fix Outlook Sync:

    Remove and readd the Account:

    Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts

    Delete all Outlook/Hotmail type accounts.

    Reboot.

Then add fresh ones through Outlook, not the Windows Mail app.

    Check permissions:

Go to Settings > Privacy > Email/Calendar → Make sure apps can access it.

    Reset the Outlook app:

Settings > Apps > Installed Apps > Outlook > Advanced Options > Reset.

Alternatively, you can uninstall → Reboot → Reinstall from the Microsoft Store.

    Clear the mail cache:

Open Command Prompt with admin right and run: wsreset.exe

Use the web version as a stopgap measure:

Go to https://outlook.live.com until the app starts behaving.

PART 4: "TOO MANY ATTEMPTS" ON MICROSOFT LOGIN

Unusual login attempts (especially after reinstalls or password resets) are typically subjected to Microsoft's brute-force lockout.

Solution: Wait for a couple of hours (24 hours max, usually) and then try logging in using a private/incognito window. Try logging in from a different device or browser.

If completely blocked, try the recovery tool: https://account.live.com/ResetPassword.aspx

    Regards,

    Tin

    Hello Tin,

there are good news, bad news and very frustrating news...

Good news : computer is now shutting down and restarting without any pop up or error messages. Windows update and Store are up and running.

Bad news : I had no other choice but to completely reinstall Windows 11 after another series of problems and issues, the most critic of them being that yesterday I couldn't even enter my very own computer following a restart !!!! The computer and Microsoft account kept sending me an error message that my device was offline !!!! That lead to a password change that was totally unnecessary as I entered the correct password each time but Microsoft kept telling me is was impossible lo log in. And again that message that a code would be sent to my email, code that like I said before, for one I never ever receive and for two, should a code be sent it has to be a different email.

By some kind of miracle, in all of the reinstalling, my personal files were kept but I had to reinstall all my apps. Which leads me to the frustrating news.

Frustrating news : I fear the root of all my problems is either my Microsoft account or the Outlook app on my laptop.

First, when I want to connect to connect to my Microsoft account from a browser (in order to, say, redact this post) I want to sign in with my password but I get a message error saying "too many attempts". If only 1 attempt is too much, wow...something needs to be done asap.

Two, the outlook app is installed on my laptop but it is not synchronizing. I tried to send a message, but it fails. It is neither in the sending box nor the sent box.

Another problem, I put some mails in the archive or sub files, but when I open the app later, those mails are still in the inbox.

Ah, and because I had to reinstall everything, so I had to do with the outlook accounts. I tried to add my second account (hotmail) like it used to be and guess what...it says that it will send a code to this very own mail to confirm the account. But I never ever receive the confirmation code !!!!!!!!!

I have no idea what is going on with Microsoft, its millions requests regarding security and the fact that even if the account is set to certain preferences, it just disregard them. But, it is extremely frustrating. How can I do not access my email, my personal account on my own computer is a mystery and a huge inconvenience !

    Hi,

This is wonderful progress. If the Task Host window problem disappears in Safe Mode, we can surely conclude that something within a process, service, or background application is tied to the issue and is not loaded in Safe Boot. This already narrows down our search immensely.

Before going for the full repair install option, yes, there are some more surgical things we might want to try to rectify these remaining broken elements (like Windows Update, Microsoft Store, and Outlook) without outright replacing the whole OS at this stage.

Here's what to try next (in normal mode):

    1. Running Full System Cleanup with PowerShell

Typically resets many stopped components and app services:

    • Open Powershell as Administrator
    • Right Click Start => Windows Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin)

Paste this command (resets Store + App services):

    Get-AppxPackage *windowsstore* | Reset-AppxPackage

    Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.WindowsStore* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

    Later run:

    sfc /scannow

    Follow it with:

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Let complete the first before going to the next.

    1. Reset Windows Update Components

Corrupt update services are the most common suspects. Run this complete reset script via CMD as Admin:

    net stop bits

    net stop wuauserv

    net stop appidsvc

    net stop cryptsvc

    Del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat"

    Ren %Systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

    Ren %Systemroot%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

    net start bits

    net start wuauserv

    net start appidsvc

net start cryptsvc After executing this, simply restart it and then check:

Settings > Windows Update (if it loads)

Microsoft Store (try firing it up)

    1. Reinstall/Repair Microsoft Store, Outlook, and UWP apps

In PowerShell (Admin), run this to reinstall-therefore all built-in apps, that include Outlook (if available), Microsoft Store, Settings, and more:

    Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Might take some time for this command to finish. Don't bother with warnings like "already exists."

    1. Try a Clean Boot (not Safe Boot)

That's about testing if the problem is caused due to third-party software or services interfering with it:

Press Windows + R and type msconfig and press Enter.

Go to Services tab → check Hide all Microsoft services → click Disable all

Go to Startup tab > Open Task Manager → disable all entries

    Reboot

    Then test:

    Windows Update

    Microsoft Store

    Outlook login (if applicable)

If everything works well under this clean boot, it confirms that the culprit is startup program or service.

    Regards,

    Tin

    Hello Tin,

    Thank you for your answer.

I tried the first method and it did manage to restart without the task host window pop up.

However, I couldn't check everything for in safe boot I have no access to internet. So no possibility to check is windows update is loading, same for microsoft store and of course as outlook is not working (I don't even know if it's installed) I can't checked if is working properly or not.

Before moving to step 2, is there something else that I can do ?

    Regards,

Hi, Thanks for writing. I am Tin, and I am an independent advisor. I am so happy to offer you any needed assistance today. Please keep in mind that this user-to-user community forum is open to the public.

Here are some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.

STEP 1 - Verify Safe Boot

Testing the base operating system without any other services.

Pressing Win + R and typing in "msconfig," then pressing Enter.

    Click on the Boot tab.

Select Safe boot and Network, hit OK, and restart.

See if: shutting down/restarting works without "Task Host Window."

Microsoft Store and sign-in works better than ever.

If everything works for you: You most likely have a service-level or third-party app issue.

If not: core Windows is damaged — go to next steps.

STEP 2 - Repair through an In-Place Upgrade (No File Loss)

As no update or restore is functional, this step installs the base files without touching personal files or applications.

On another PC (or if you can on yours), go to:

Download USB flash drive installation media from Windows 11

Choose Create Installation Media, and save it as an ISO or USB.

Either double click on the ISO, or launch setup-exe from the USB.

IMPORTANT: Keeping personal files and apps is important.

This will: displace damaged Windows components (store, update, services)

Fix damaged entries in the system registry

Maintain all your files / applications untouched. If setup does not start or crashes, skip to STEP 4.

STEP 3 - Check for Microsoft Account Delivery Hitches

Your account is most likely affected by the same issue with not receiving codes, but also check here: http://account.live.com/security

Try editing security information from a browse that works

    Check email/phone numbers for accuracy

Add a further email/telephone if possible

Create a new Mzcrosoft account temporarily if online updating does not allow any codes to be received by the associated account, and try signing in to your laptop using the newly created Microsoft account (Microsoft Store, Outlook, etc.) — this confirms whether the problem is on-device level or on-account level.

STEP 4 - All Repair Install via Cloud Reset (Optional Last Resort)

Windows Reset with cloud reinstall (the apps will be wiped but not the personal files) will be the recourse when the in-place repair fails. Recovery Settings> Reset this PC: Setting>System> Recovery:

After that: Choose: Keep my files

    Cloud download

Let Windows download and reinstall a fresh one

This is like a clean reinstall but it keeps your documents and pictures intact (apps like Office or games will need reinstalling).

    Regards,

    Tin
