Windows 11 Chinese/Japanese IME Severe Input Lag Issue - Intermittent 5-10 Second Character Delay

Problem Summary: I'm experiencing a persistent and highly frustrating bug on Windows 11 that affects non-English input methods (Chinese and Japanese IME). This issue occurs intermittently, typically 1-2 times per week, but sometimes multiple times within a week.

Detailed Symptoms:

  • Severe input lag when using Windows built-in Chinese or Japanese IME
  • Character input delay ranges from several seconds to 10+ seconds per character
  • When switching back to English mode (either temporarily via Shift in Chinese IME or switching to English in Japanese IME), typing returns to normal speed
  • Switching back to non-English input immediately triggers the lag again
  • Key Detail: This issue typically starts when using Teams (New), then persists across ALL applications - including built-in Notepad, Word, browsers, etc.
  • The problem affects the entire system, not just specific software

Duration & Recovery:

  • Sometimes resolves automatically within 10 minutes
  • Other times persists indefinitely until system restart
  • Restarting the computer always resolves the issue temporarily

Troubleshooting Already Attempted:

  1. Checked Event Viewer during lag periods - No Error-level events found in System, Application, or IME-related logs
  2. Monitored Task Manager - No abnormal CPU or RAM usage during the lag periods
  3. Cannot identify any specific process causing the issue

System Environment:

  • OS: Windows 11 [include your specific version/build number]
  • The issue affects both Microsoft Pinyin (Chinese) and Microsoft Japanese IME
  • Problem occurs regardless of the active application

Questions for Microsoft Support:

  1. Are there any specific Windows logs or diagnostic tools that could help identify the root cause of this IME performance issue?
  2. Is this a known compatibility issue between Teams (New) and Windows 11 IME services?
  3. What additional diagnostic steps would Microsoft recommend to isolate this intermittent system-wide input lag?

This appears to be a system-level issue potentially related to IME service conflicts or resource management. Any guidance from Microsoft engineers would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Pau,

Thank you for the comprehensive troubleshooting steps. I've attempted several of the suggested solutions, but encountered some limitations due to corporate environment restrictions. Here's my feedback:

    > Restart IME Services I searched for "Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service" in services.msc, but this service doesn't exist in my system.

    > Update Windows and IME My Windows 11 is currently up to date according to Windows Update. However, since this is a corporate machine, I cannot guarantee that all updates are available due to company policy restrictions.

    > Clear IME Dictionary The IME dictionary was already empty - no custom entries were found.

    > Delete Teams Cache & Use Web Version I believe this approach may not be applicable to my situation. When the input lag occurs, ALL non-English text input becomes unusable system-wide - not just in Teams. The issue affects Notepad, browsers, Word, and every other application simultaneously. This suggests the problem is at the system/IME service level rather than being Teams-specific.

    > Check System Files and Run DISM Unfortunately, I cannot execute these commands due to corporate security policies and lack of administrative privileges.

    > Create New Windows User Profile As mentioned above, I'm unable to modify system configurations on this corporate machine.

    Additional Questions:

    1. Are there alternative diagnostic steps that don't require administrative privileges?
    2. Could you suggest which specific Windows services related to IME I should monitor or restart?
    3. Is there a way to identify the root cause through Event Viewer or other built-in tools?

The fact that this is a system-wide IME issue (affecting all applications when it occurs) and that it typically starts during Teams usage suggests there might be a deeper compatibility or resource conflict issue.

Thank you for your continued assistance.

    Best regards.

    Hi,

I’m Pau, an Independent Advisor. Thank you for giving more information about the input lag that happens sometimes with the Chinese and Japanese IMEs in Windows 11. I understand how annoying this is, and I'm here to help you fix it.

To fix the problem and make it less bad, please follow these steps:

    > Start up IME Services Again

Press and hold Windows + R and type services.msc. Click on "Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service" and then right-click on it. Start over

    > Get Windows and IME up to date

Click on Settings, then Windows Update. Check for new content > Install all available updates, including language and IME updates that aren't required.

    > Turn off Hardware Prediction of Keyboard Text

Click on Settings, then Devices, then Typing. Shut down "Show text suggestions as I type on the hardware keyboard"

    > Clear out the IME dictionary

Time and Language > Language and Region > Settings Get your language pack, then go to Options. Clear the dictionary

    > Delete Teams' Cache

Leave Teams and go to %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams. Delete everything in the Cache folder and then restart Teams.

    > For now, use the web version of Microsoft Teams

Use Teams in a browser (like Edge or Chrome) to see if the lag is caused by the desktop app.

    > Check the system files and run DISM.

Type "cmd" as an administrator > Do a scan with sfc > Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth when it's done.

    > Make a new profile for yourself in Windows

Going to Settings > Accounts > Family and other users Add someone else to this computer > Sign in and check out IME

    > Turn off any third-party antivirus or security software for a short time

Turn off or remove to see if it interferes with IME services.

If these steps don't fix the lag, using Windows Performance Recorder to collect logs and sending detailed feedback through Feedback Hub would help Microsoft engineers look into it further.

Let me know if you need help with any step or more information.

    Best regards,

    Pau
