I still use the old Windows backup, without problem. backups successful to removable drive (G) Toshiba.

Today backup failed.

I also tried to create a system image, using 2 different ways.

These also failed.

Screen shots following.

Any help, please?

Hi there, thank you for sharing those screenshots. I’m Cherrelyn, an Independent Advisor, and I understand how frustrating it is when a long-working backup suddenly fails. From your logs and error messages (0x80780166, “Incorrect function,” and “The server threw an exception”), the issue seems related to the external drive (G:) or Windows Backup permissions. Here’s a concise, step-by-step guide to help you fix it:

Try These Fixes:

1.Reconnect the External Drive

-Safely remove the Toshiba drive, reconnect it, and check if it mounts properly in File Explorer.

-Right-click > Properties > Tools > Error Checking – fix any disk issues.

2.Run Backup as Administrator

-Open Control Panel > Backup and Restore (Windows 7)

-Click “Manage space”, then clean old backups.

-Then try running a new backup as admin.

3.Reformat Backup Drive (if possible)

-Back up its contents to another location first.

-Reformat as NTFS. Corruption or permission issues can cause error 517.

4.Enable VSS Services

-Press Win + R, type services.msc

-Ensure these are Running & Automatic:

-Volume Shadow Copy

-Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider

5.Create a New Backup Configuration

Instead of using the old schedule, click “Set up backup” again and configure a fresh backup to the same or new drive.

Let me know how it goes or if you’d like help with alternatives like File History or 3rd-party backup tools that might better fit your workflow.

Warmly,

Cherrelyn

Thanks very much for your reply.

I found another entry on the web, and this was practically the same advice you gave.

What I did, was chkdsk on removable disk (G). No problems.

I then used Windows b/up and recovery to delete all previous images, including the folder (b/up containing windows images).

I created a new restore point on drive (G), and checked it went through without problem.

Created a new system image on (G). This time no problem.

Checked drive (G) back up details, and all ok.

Ran Windows backup, and success. All ok.

What a hassle, but at least problems now seem to be resolve.

    Thanks again for your response.
