Hi there,
I'm Cherrelyn, an Independent Advisor thank you for reaching out, and I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this, especially with your laptop being so important for school. Let’s walk through a few clear steps to help restore your taskbar and resolve the update issue (error 0x800700b7). Don’t worry you don’t need to buy a new laptop.
Step 1: Restart Windows Explorer (Restores Taskbar)
-Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
-Look for Windows Explorer in the list.
-Right-click it → choose Restart.
Step 2: Run System Repair (SFC & DISM)
Sometimes corrupt system files cause the taskbar or update issues.
-Right-click Start - Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
-Run this first:
sfc /scannow
-After it finishes, run this:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Restart your PC after both finish.
Step 3: Clear Windows Update Cache
-Press Win + R, type: services.msc, and hit Enter.
-Scroll down and right-click Windows Update, select Stop.
-Go to: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
-Delete everything inside this folder (not the folder itself).
-Go back to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
Now, retry installing the update from Settings > Windows Update.
Step 4: Optional Reset Using Repair Mode
If nothing else works:
-Go to Settings > System > Recovery.
-Under Recovery options, click Reset this PC > Keep my files.
--Choose Local reinstall.
This keeps your files but refreshes Windows and often fixes deep issues.
If the desktop is flashing or Windows becomes unusable, I can guide you through booting into Safe Mode or System Restore too.
Let me know how far you get with these steps and I’ll stay with you through the process.
Warm regards,
Cherrelyn
