Shutdown or Sleep?

Hi again, I have been using my Lenovo laptop a number of years now. Starting with Windows 8.1 and now Windows 10. I am normally using it throughout the day on and off. I normally press the "Shutdown" option and even turn it off at the wall each time. Although I press "Shutdown" it seems to be set to "Sleep" is this correct (as per screen shot). I have read various sites which indicate that I shouldn't keep turning off at the wall (unless I am going away etc) I assume by setting to Sleep it stores memory in the Ram hence quicker boot up!

Some advice please on what's the best settings etc! Also there are some suggestions about turning "Fast start up" off. I think it's better on!!

Yes, in your case, the shutdown button and the sleep button are set to the same option: sleep.

You can set the shutdown button to another option to avoid this confusion; it can be the hibernate option, as I mentioned, or the shutdown, set the best option for you.

Hi Rodrigo, thanks for your swift reply and well explained! What confuses me is the the 4 options when closing down. It looks like in my case "Shutdown" and "Sleep" are the same (as per screen shot) What I mean is the Shutdown is set to sleep which confuses me!! Regarding Restart I do that regularly but thank you for mentioning it.

    Hi,

I'm Rodrigo and I'll help you.

The sleep option does not turn the laptop off completely; it keeps the data on the RAM and some components at a minimum power consumption. If you unplug the laptop from the wall, it will keep using the battery and eventually die out of battery.

The best use for the sleep option is when you need to be away from the laptop for a short time.

A better option when you will be away for a long time is to use the Hibernate option; it is not as fast as the sleep option, but it will not use any power, and you can safely unplug the laptop from the wall.

Neither of the options will shut the system down completely, so it is recommended to restart the computer once a week to reload the system files.
