I usually get around 10-15 unsuccessful log in attempts daily. I check morning /evening everyday. I write down the last 4 (from which ever country) attempts & start over from there. This morning I checked & the original last 4 from yesterday were my beginning 4. I just checked again & nothing has changed. I can't believe they just got tired & stopped. What could be going on? Thank you.
Though it's not possible to be certain as already mentioned, the timing of these bot attacks having stopped only about 10 days after the following official notice by Microsoft having disrupted the Lumma Stealer network may be at least partially related. since often one set of global takedowns will lead to others.
Since Lumma Stealer was recently the most prolific method used be cybercriminals to collect personal and account related information, it's quite likely this is how your original account information including possibly past passwords might have been captured.
Once they had this basic information, the account password attempts would have started along with those for thousands of others performed in parallel by bots often installed on some of the same systems that were originally infected by Lumma stealer among others.
Once Microsoft and the others mentioned in the article were taken down, the various added information those command-and-control sites contained could have easily led to the discovery of others yet unknown to Microsoft, which eventually via court order they might gain the right to either take those down or at least sinkhole the attacker bot devices in order to stop the attack attempts.
Whether this is the precise set of event or not doesn't really matter, since it's how these major bot networks are often disrupted and eventually shutdown entirely, even in cases like this one where the primary offending organization is located in a part of the world, in this case Russia, where it's not possible to get cooperation with the take down itself.
