Hi!

My Discord won't start when it gets stuck on updates and says update failed.

I can get it to work in safe mode + internet, but I can't get the app to work on Windows 11 when I tried using it.

Please provide a picture to illustrate the situation.

Thanks everyone for your help!

    Hello Tino,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your situation. I am Udit and I am glad to assist you today. I understand how important it is to have Discord running smoothly, so let’s work through this together step by step.

    Here’s what you can try:

    1. First, make sure Discord is fully closed. You can open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc, then look for any Discord processes and end them.
    2. Next, let’s clear the update files that might be corrupted: Press Win + R, type %localappdata%, and hit Enter. Find the Discord folder and delete the folder named Update if it’s there.
    3. Try running Discord as an administrator. Right-click on the Discord icon and select Run as administrator. This helps if Discord needs extra permissions to finish updating.
    4. Sometimes antivirus or firewall programs block the update without you noticing. If you feel comfortable, try temporarily disabling any antivirus software or firewall and see if Discord updates. If that works, you can add Discord to the exceptions list later.
    5. If none of this helps, a clean reinstall usually does the trick: Uninstall Discord from your Apps settings. Go back to %localappdata% and %appdata% and delete any leftover Discord folders.

now turn off your computer for 2 minutes then turn it back on.

Download a fresh copy of Discord from the official website and install it.

    1. Also, resetting your internet settings can help if the update is being blocked by network issues: Open Command Prompt as administrator. Type these commands one by one and press Enter after each: netsh winsock reset netsh int ip reset Restart your PC and try again.

Because Discord works in Safe Mode, it’s possible that another program running normally is causing interference. If you’d like, I can guide you through a clean boot to identify any such programs.

Here’s a picture showing the update failed message — just so we’re on the same page about what you’re seeing:

Please take your time with these steps, and let me know how it goes. I’m here to help you get this sorted.

    Udit
