Well, ran Eden launcher in compatibility mode (Windows 7) for 4 hrs. No 'out of memory' issues so far. This might have fixed this issue. Thank you so much for your advice!!!!
Windows11 pro, SmartHeap Library. Out of Memory. Please free some memory, then choose to retry.
I keep getting this error, while playing an old game. I do have other programs running, Chrome (4-10 tabs), Task Manager, Discord, and a handful of other apps. Task Managers shows I have plenty of memory is available.
Hoping there is help for this. My system info is as follows.
Thank you in advance.

2025-05-28T00:37:43+00:00 Thanks for the info. Given that you're running DAoC via Eden Freeshard, the launcher and custom tweaks they use might be the real cause of that memory issue, especially since the original EA client doesn’t give you the same error. These private servers often modify the game engine or how it allocates resources, and that can trip up old memory handling code.
Try these steps:
- Run the Eden launcher in compatibility mode. Try right-clicking the Eden launcher (or any custom .exe it uses), go to Properties > Compatibility, and then choose Windows XP (SP3) or Windows 7.
Check “Run this program as administrator.”
Sometimes the launcher itself is what triggers the memory routines — not just the game.
Some Discord integrations (like Eden’s login process) may also be colliding with background services. Try doing a clean boot to test:
Press Win + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
Go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
On the Startup tab, open Task Manager and disable anything non-essential.
Restart and try Eden again.

Let me know how it goes!

2025-05-28T00:28:08+00:00 Thank Julian,
I will try to do what you have advised.
Name of the game is Dark Age of Camelot, MMoRPG. It was released back in 2002 and currently owned and operated by Electronic Arts.
The memory issue is popping up when I run the game on a free shard. Eden Dark Age of Camelot Freeshard. It uses the downloadable game client from EA, DAoC. Then it installs a launcher to launch the game. It uses Discord to authenticate.
I have not experience the memory issue on the DAoC, by EA. But I do not play it much, since the game is basically dead and there is no population. But Freeshard is thriving.
Thank you again,

2025-05-27T06:29:22+00:00 Hi, my name is Julian, an independent advisor. Since this is a public forum made up mostly of fellow gamers and users, all we can offer are guidance and suggestions. I'm sorry you're experiencing this issue.
That “SmartHeap Out of Memory” error is a common one with older games, especially when they’re running on newer hardware like yours. Even if Task Manager shows plenty of free RAM, older games sometimes just don’t know how to handle modern memory management, they hit a ceiling based on how they were originally coded.
Here are a few things you can try:
Right-click the game’s .exe file and go to Properties > Compatibility.
Check "Run this program in compatibility mode" and choose Windows 7 or XP.
Also check "Run this program as administrator."

You can also try to turn off Memory Integrity temporarily as it can sometimes interfere with older fames. It’s a security feature, so only disable it if you’re just testing.
Go to Windows Security > Device Security > Core isolation details.
Toggle Memory integrity off (you can turn it back on after testing).

Even if you have plenty of RAM, apps like Chrome (especially with 10+ tabs), Discord, and others can affect how memory is allocated. Try closing them before launching the game, just to see if it helps.
If you tell me the name of the game, I might be able to find a game-specific fix too.
Hope this helps!
