How do I remove Recall? It was installed in this latest Windows 11 update and I think that this is a security risk for me, my businesses, and my clients.

I do not trust that simply "turning off the feature" will stop Recall from scanning my activities on the device.

Hello RickFabiani! Thank you so much for reaching out, I am Elise an independent advisor, and I am glad to assist you today with this issue.

To remove or disable the Recall feature in Windows 11, especially if you're concerned about privacy and security, you can try the following steps:

    1. Identify Recall:

First, confirm if Recall is a built-in Windows feature or a third-party app. Check your installed programs via Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs. If it's a recent update component, it might be listed under system features or as an optional feature.

    1. Uninstall or Disable the App: If Recall appears as an installed app, select it and click Uninstall. For built-in features, disabling may require more advanced steps.
2. Adjust Privacy Settings: Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback. Turn off or set to minimal the data sharing options, such as Send my device data to Microsoft. Also review app permissions and disable any that are unnecessary.
    3. Use Group Policy or Registry Edits (for advanced control): If you're on Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise, open gpedit.msc and navigate to:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds. Alternatively, modify registry keys like:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection

    1. Consider Third-Party Privacy Tools: Use reputable privacy software to block telemetry and data collection.

I'm not sure where you are getting your information but if it's due to the many negative articles that have been published, you may not have all the facts. Microsoft delayed Recall multiple times due to privacy and security concerns. Microsoft addressed these concerns and has gone so far as to make Recall an optional opt-in feature while adding end-to-end encrypted plus a biometric sign-in requirement. As some security researchers have state "not even Microsoft can access your Recall data."

You may want to read these articles before making a final decision or doing anything.

The reason why Recall was pulled from its initial launch target was because of major privacy concerns that were spotted quickly after the announcement...Microsoft has committed to using encryption to keep your data secure until you've logged in, in addition to requiring Windows Hello to verify your identity on the PC. Plus, you'll have to re-authenticate occasionally to ensure your PC hasn't been hijacked, plus all the processes that are used to verify your identity run in a secure isolated environment to avoid tampering. This should alleviate any big concerns you might have with the privacy implications of using Recall.
