W11 Notepad not saving sessions on close - asking to save all the time

I really loved that the new W11 Notepad allowed you to create a new notepad session, and you could close the app without having to save it. And then when you opened the app again, it re-opened your sessions again with the content you had before.

Recently I have notice that it is no longer allowing me to close Notepad without having to first save any sessions (tabs) that are open.

My app settings look fine to me.

Does anyone know why I am being asked to save everything now?

It turns out that the behaviour, expressed in my question, happens when you have more than 1 instance of notepad open.

I had started 2 instances of notepad, each with their own sessions/tabs in them. But when I just had 1 instance of notepad open, with sessions/tabs, it allowed me to close it without prompting to save.

I had the same issue. Notepad used to open multiple tabs, and I could close the app without being asked to save. Then suddenly, without any warning, it started asking me whether I wanted to save when shutting down Windows, which was strange. I tried the solutions mentioned here, but none of them worked. However, I found a method that fixed it, and now Notepad works again without asking to save. In Notepad settings, under When Notepad Starts, it was set to Continue previous session. I changed it to Start new session and discard unsaved changes, then reopened Notepad, and changed it back to Continue previous session. Surprisingly, Notepad started working properly again!

    Hello,

I'm not exactly sure why you're being prompted to save, but I'd recommend trying the Repair or Reset option for Notepad.

Right-click Notepad in the Start menu

    Select More > App settings

Choose Repair, and if needed, Reset.

Please note that resetting will restore Notepad to its default state, so you may need to reconfigure some settings afterward.

Make sure to save any important data before proceeding.
