Activate Windows suddenly appeared

Today I noticed the text "Activate Windows. Go to Settings to activate Windows" in the bottom right corner of my screen.

Under System > Activation there is red text that says "We can't activate Windows on this device right now. You can try activating again later or go to the Store to buy genuine Windows. Error code: 0x803FABC3"

Clicking Troubleshoot brings up the dialog and afterwards says "Troubleshooting has completed. We weren't able to active Windows on this device".

I have a genuine copy of Windows and have been using it on this computer for the last year and a half.

Please help me understand why this has suddenly appeared and how I can fix it.

Thank you.

My version of Windows was upgraded from Windows 10 which was purchased from a retail store.

Thanks for sharing the screenshots Phoenix.

Based on the screenshots, you're running Windows 10/11 Pro with a Retail license. Normally, re-entering your product key should fix the activation issue. Since that didn’t work, there may be something else interfering with activation.

Upgrading or replacing RAM usually doesn’t affect Windows activation. However, sometimes a glitch during the hardware scan as when the RAM was changed, can confuse Windows into thinking it’s a new device. Did removing the extra RAM stick help at all?

It could be a server issue. So, go to Settings > System > Activation and click Activate again. If it still doesn’t work, give it another try in 24–48 hours, it sometimes resolves on its own.

Also, I recommend checking for any available BIOS or firmware updates, as these can sometimes help clear up activation problems too.

    Please keep me posted.

Looks like you're on retail license. You can re-insert your unique Windows 11/10 product key to re-activate.

Hello, my name is James and I will do my best to help you with this.

It is possible that Windows activation has become corrupt. Checking your system files might resolve the issue.

To check Windows system files, do the following:

    1. Right-click on the Start menu, and then select Terminal (Admin).
    2. Enter sfc /scannow, and then select Enter.
    3. Wait for the scan to complete.

You might need to restart your computer for any repairs to take effect.

Hi , I'm Dyari. Thanks for reaching out. I will be happy to assist you in this regard.

May I ask which edition of Windows is currently running on your computer? Also, did you purchase the license directly from the official Microsoft website?

Click Start > Type Winver and hit enter > Screenshot and post it back.
