I wanted to switch from windows 10 to windows 11. Everything seemed to be installed successfully but when I restarted my computer it went back to the windows 10 screen and gave me the error “ 0x80070070 -0x2000A ”. What should I do?

    Hi,

Error 0x80070070 denotes insufficient disk space on the OS partition. Please free up at least 30 GB of disk space on the C drive and try again.

Before running the Windows 11 setup, follow these steps to ensure a smooth upgrade experience.

Enable Memory Integrity. To do so, go to Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details > Memory integrity. If it shows any incompatible drivers, post the screenshot here.

To avoid third-party software interference, perform a clean boot on the system before running the setup. A clean boot is the process of starting Windows without loading any third-party applications or services. For more information, please refer to the Microsoft article.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support
(Step 3 in the above link is very important. You need to first enable "Hide all Microsoft Services" before clicking "Disable all".)

Uninstall 3rd party antivirus if installed; you can reinstall it after the upgrade. After uninstalling it, restart Windows.

    Hi

I have the same problem. MS Remote Support tried to upgrade my 10 to 11 with the ISO file, but it failed. My laptop meets the specs for an upgrade to 11.
We couldn’t install Windows 11 We’ve set your PC back to the way it was right before you started installing Windows 11

    0x80070070 – 0x2000A

**The installation failed in the Safe_OS Phase with an error during PREPARE FIRST BOOT operation
    **
Judging from this thread, the 0x80070070 – 0x2000A is a lack of sufficient storage issue. I had less than 10 GB free on my C Drive when MS Remote Support tried the ISO upgrade.
A second rep (after the failure) wanted to wipe both my drives, repartition, and do a clean install of 11 - I declined that option and am still hoping for a simpler solution.

I have since managed to get my free space on C up to 18 GB, but this thread suggests that it is still not enough. I suppose that I can delete apps until I get to 30 GB (and then reinstall them - a pain).

Is it worth trying to upgrade again with 18 GB of free space and which option to use?

The upgrade options seem to be...

    Settings > Windows Update

    Windows 11 Installation Assistant

    Create Windows 11 Installation Media

Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) - I already deleted the ISO file MS Support downloaded
Of course, I have no guarantee that I won't run into a different error while trying to upgrade.

I have enabled Memory Integrity, but have not done any of the other steps mentioned above.

I'd like to keep this laptop for another 1 - 2 years.
I'm also happy to keep Windows 10 with the supplemental protection ($30?) for 1 more year.

    Thank you for any advice
    Andrew

The most successful method to upgrade to Windows 11 is to use the Windows 11 ISO.

Please follow the steps, this is then not like re-installing Windows, it is just like an update and your personal files, settings and installed software will not be affected.

You will need at least 40GB of free space on your C drive.

    Click this link:

    https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11

to download the Windows 11 ISO

When the ISO file completes downloading

    Disconnect from the Internet

Disconnect all external devices with the exception of a mouse or keyboard.

Temporarily disable any 3rd party Anti-virus you may have installed

Then, in Windows File Explorer, double click the ISO and then run Setup.exe and select the Install option.

Very Important - ensure you select the option to keep your files and apps.
