Hello,

Currently, when an agent is created using the Azure AI Foundry, only OpenAI's models are available. Other models show a lock symbol, and are unavailable. Can I know when these models will be available for agentic use?

Hello Sushant !

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Learn.

The lock icon signifies that the model is not yet enabled for agent deployment, even if it's available elsewhere in Azure (for example for deployments in Azure Machine Learning or model catalog).

Only OpenAI models (like gpt-4, gpt-35-turbo...) are currently enabled for Azure AI Agents.

Microsoft has likely restricted LLaMA, Mistral, Meta, and Cohere models in this specific "agent" workflow, either:

  • due to ongoing integration/testing
  • because of licensing or partnership limitations with those model providers
  • or they're being phased in gradually

There is no official public timeline announced by Microsoft yet for when locked third-party models (like LLaMA 3, Mistral....) will be enabled for agents in AI Foundry.
