Hello, rody Ahmed
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Community.
When you plug your Kindle into a Windows 11 PC and it only charges (but never shows up in File Explorer), it almost always comes down to one of these four culprits:
- ► Try using an original Amazon USB cable, or any cable you know can transfer files (like your phone's sync cable)
- ► On modern Kindles, after unlocking the screen, you may need to pull down the notification shade and tap "USB Charge this device" → Transfer files (MTP).
- ► If Windows doesn't have an MTP driver available, it will show up as an unknown device in Device Manager (🔍 Start → Device Manager) or show an error under "Portable Devices".
Always remember to check the USB cable before you start further troubleshooting, many USB cables (especially generic "fast charge" cables) only have power and ground connected, no data wires, so Windows will never see the Kindle as a storage device. Always use an original Amazon USB cable or another cable you know supports file transfers, and plug into the back panel USB port (or powered hub) instead of the front port.
Then follow the steps below and check if it helps your Kindle to display correctly on your PC:
- Remove and re-add the Kindle in Windows Sometimes Windows mis-identifies the device. To force a fresh enumeration:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & other devices → More devices and printer settings
- Find any “Kindle” entry, right-click → Remove device
- Unplug, then reconnect the Kindle This lets Windows load the correct MTP driver.
- Install or update the MTP driver Kindles use the Media Transfer Protocol. Use Windows Search to find Device Manager:
- Enable View→ Show hidden devices
- Expand Portable Devices (or Disk Drives)
- Right-click “MTP Device” or “Kindle Internal Storage USB Device” → Update driver → Browse my computer → Let me pick → MTP USB Device If you don’t see it, click Have Disk… and point to
C:\Windows\INF\wpdmtp.inf.
- Perform a hard reset of the Kindle A firmware glitch can block USB enumeration. With the Kindle plugged in, press and hold the Power button for ~40 seconds until it restarts, then try again.
- Try alternate connection modes On some models you can override the default mode: swipe down on the Kindle, tap USB options, and select Connect as camera. You can also toggle Developer Options → ADB on/off to trigger a new USB handshake.
- Right-click “MTP Device” or “Kindle Internal Storage USB Device” → Update driver → Browse my computer → Let me pick → MTP USB Device If you don’t see it, click Have Disk… and point to
- Expand Portable Devices (or Disk Drives)
- Enable View→ Show hidden devices
- Find any “Kindle” entry, right-click → Remove device
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & other devices → More devices and printer settings
Let me know how it goes!
