Is there a way to use a xbox 360 controller on pc and if so do i need a external device?

i want to use my xbox 360 controller on my pc but i cant find a way to connect it

    If it's a Wired Xbox 360 Controller:

    Just plug it in via USB. Windows should auto-install the driver.

    If it's a Wireless Xbox 360 Controller:

    You need a Wireless Receiver. Buy a Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows. Plug it into USB, and Windows may auto-install the drivers.
