Hello Laura,**
Quick ways to turn the touchpad off in Windows 11 Home**
- Use Windows Settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices → Touchpad.
- Flip the Touchpad** toggle to Off.
- If you only want it off when a USB mouse is connected, expand Touchpad and un-tick “Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected.”
- Via Device Manager (helpful when the Settings toggle is missing or greyed out)
- Right-click Start → Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices (or Mice and other pointing devices).
- Right-click the item that mentions I2C HID, Touchpad, Dell Touchpad, or Synaptics and choose Disable device.
- Confirm. Touchpad input stops until you re-enable it the same way.
- Dell’s Function-key shortcut
- Many Dell laptops let you toggle the touchpad with Fn + F3 (look for a touch-pad icon). Press once to disable; press again to re-enable.
- Dell Peripheral Manager / BIOS
- Some recent Dell models expose a touch-pad on/off switch in BIOS Setup (F2 on boot) under Advanced → Internal Pointing Device. Set to Disabled to turn it off even before Windows loads.
- Install or update Dell touch-pad drivers
- If no disable option appears, install the latest Dell touch-pad (Synaptics or Precision) driver from Dell Support. The driver often restores the Settings toggle and Fn key-toggling.
If nothing works
- Make sure Windows Update and Dell Update have installed firmware and driver updates for your exact model.
- Check Dell’s Support site with your Service Tag for the newest touch-pad package; install and reboot.
- As a last resort, an inexpensive USB mouse combined with disabling the touch-pad in BIOS guarantees it stays off.
Re-enabling later
Simply reverse the step you used—toggle back on in Settings, re-enable in Device Manager, or press Fn + F3 again. Enjoy typing without phantom cursor jumps!
Best Regards,
Jerald Felix
