ICS file no longer imports events into Outlook

Microsoft, ICS files used to import calendar events into Outlook with a simple click. That function stopped working rather recently. Many people have expressed this issue through multiple posts, but all we are getting are run-of-the-mill troubleshooting steps. Telling thousands of people to clear their cache, use new Outlook, use classic Outlook, use Outlook web, drag and drop onto the calendar, etc etc etc etc is a useless waste of time. This is not a problem with thousands of local PCs. Something changed with Outlook. Find out what it is and fix it.

I am using Microsoft Outlook for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2506 Build 16.0.18925.20076) 64-bit on Windows 11 v24H2 (OS Build 26100.4652). Just my personal PC and Outlook account. No business policies. No complex programming.

Here's how it's supposed to work:

  1. Someone sends me a meeting invite or recurring event by attaching a properly formatted ICS file to an email
  2. I double click the ICS file
  3. Outlook event gets imported into the calendar

Until recently this worked fine. Now it does not. Getting error: "The operation failed". Does the Outlook development team have anything to say? Are they aware? Have they looked into what update may have broken this BASIC AND EXPECTED behavior?

Please troubleshoot the actual issue instead of making thousands of people go through useless exercises on local PCs that do nothing to address the root cause with Outlook functionality.

Thank you for your efforts in coming up with the real fix.

    Hello!

I understand how frustrating it is when something as basic as importing ICS files into Outlook suddenly stops working, especially after it’s worked flawlessly for a long time. You’re definitely not alone—many users are experiencing the same issue where double-clicking an .ics calendar event gives an error like “The operation failed” instead of adding the event to your calendar as expected.

    Here’s what’s currently known:

    What’s Happening?

    • Previously: Double-clicking an attached .ics file in Outlook would instantly import the event or meeting into your calendar.
    • Now: For many on the latest Outlook for Microsoft 365, this process is broken; you receive an error, and the import doesn’t work—even after trying basic troubleshooting steps.

Common Workarounds (That Many Find Unhelpful)

You might see the following suggested, but these steps aren’t resolving the root problem for most people:

    • Clearing Outlook’s cache or browser cache
    • Switching between Classic and New Outlook
    • Dragging and dropping the file onto the calendar
    • Using Outlook Web (OWA)

These “fixes” usually don’t restore the old single-click import behavior, and users continue to report problems.

    What’s the Real Issue?

Based on user reports, it appears something changed within Outlook itself, possibly after a recent update to Microsoft 365 Outlook. This is not due to user error, local configuration, or a wave of unrelated PC issues. The problem seems systemic and affects multiple users across versions and setups—implying a change or bug in Outlook’s handling of .ics file.

    What’s Needed?

    • A Real Fix from Microsoft: Users are asking for the Outlook development team to acknowledge the issue, investigate what specifically has changed regarding .ics file handling, and provide a genuine solution—rather than generic troubleshooting steps.

What Can You Do Right Now?

    • Keep an eye on official Microsoft forums, as repeated user feedback may prompt an update or patch soon.
    • You can report the issue through Outlook’s feedback tool for additional visibility.
    • In the meantime, using Outlook Web or alternative calendar apps may temporarily help if you need to import .ics files urgently, acknowledging this is not ideal.

Thank you for highlighting this issue so clearly. I hope Microsoft addresses this soon, and that sharing this summary helps you feel heard and less alone in your frustration.

    Best Regards,
    Jerald Felix

I have found that after double clicking the .ics the issue is the focus isn't set to the Calendar in Outlook. To get around this after tying to open navigate to the calendar and you should see a prompt to specify the Calendar to add to.ICS

I know this is old and this is still happening to me. But I found if you go to default apps and change .ics to open in outlook, it will open and you just press import and the event is added to your calendar.

You see mine was set to notepad. You click on it and change it to outlook and click set as default.

    User's image

Now when you double click on the file and it will allow you to import it into outlook.

Yes, it is an extra button from now on, but it works. You click the .ics file and then import and you are good to go.

    Have a blessed day

I am experiencing this problem with new Outlook, classic Outlook continues to work fine importing when opening a ICS from the file system.

The only workaround I've been able to sort out is to manually import the ICS within the UI, 2 ways:

    1. Select Add Calendar, and then Upload from File, and then Browse, select the calendar you want to import the event(s) to, and then hit Import
    2. Drag the ICS file into Outlook, which essentially raises the same dialogue as #1 - all you have to do is select the calendar you want to import the event(s) to, and then hit Import

What type of email account do you have configured in Outlook? POP, IMAP, Outlook.com, or Microsoft Exchange? If you have an outlook.com account, you can try turning off calendar improvements in File > Account Settings > Account Settings. Double click on the account and click More Settings then uncheck the option for calendar improvements.

I believe that is related to another calendar bug. If so, it should be fixed soon (in the next update.)

Do you get the same error if you import it. File > Open & Export > Import & Export? It's too many steps, but if it works...
