Microsoft Teams does not work with Apple's Per-App VPN (NEAppProxyProvider)

Hi,

We are facing issues and our customers also, where Teams does not work with Apple's new per-app framework "NEAppProxyProvider". We are using VMware's WorkspaceONE Tunnel for VPN and have flagged Teams to use it but Audio and Video calls do not work with it. Other features like login and text messaging works fine.

Is this known issue from Microsoft side?

Thanks.

    Hi Betty,

Please find the requested info below:

    1. If you don’t use this VPN, there is no problem with call feature in Microsoft Teams, right?

    -> Yes, that's right.

    1. Is there any error prompt when you call in Microsoft Teams, if so, please capture screenshot for me.

-> We get prompt saying "Looks like you're offline" even though the VPN is connected and we can send text messages over Teams.

    1. Collect Microsoft Teams desktop log and offer it to me in Private Message. Press “Ctrl+Shift+Alt+1” in Microsoft Teams, then you can collect the log at the bottom right corner.

-> Actually, we are using it with iOS and I have shared the Feedback from Teams apps at 11:26 AM today, under the name "Call drops" from my this account if it helps. Is there any way to manually collect logs from iOS Teams app?

    Regards,

    Sanjay.

    Hello Sanjay,

Thanks for your feedback. Sure, we could help you to further troubleshoot the error in Microsoft Teams. From your description, I’d like to confirm whether the VPN only affects call feature in Microsoft Teams client, or you cannot also call in Teams Web App.

In addition, to further check why you cannot call via Microsoft Teams, please offer me the following information, your cooperation is appreciated.

    1. If you don’t use this VPN, there is no problem with call feature in Microsoft Teams, right?
    2. Is there any error prompt when you call in Microsoft Teams, if so, please capture screenshot for me.
    3. Collect Microsoft Teams desktop log and offer it to me in Private Message. Press “Ctrl+Shift+Alt+1” in Microsoft Teams, then you can collect the log at the bottom right corner.

    Regards,

    Betty

    Hi Betty,

Thanks so much for this info. We actually reached out to Apple on this some months back and they updated us with info: "Per-app VPN is the only one that hides the client’s identity behind the VPN, so it is most possible that Skype/Teams just have problem with that (again, at least the latest version). ".

If you let us know if there is some other information needed for troubleshooting from your side or something we can provide Apple to troubleshoot regarding blocking ports etc., that would really help.

    Thanks again.

    Sanjay.

    Hello Sanjay,

Glad to help you here. I have done many researches for the phenomenon you encountered when using Microsoft Teams and Apple’s Per-App VPN, but there is no such official document that points this is a known issue in Microsoft Teams. Based on the phenomenon is caused by the VPN, it is recommended that you try to contact Apple Support to check whether the Per-App VPN blocks certain IPs or ports that are required for Microsoft Teams, for details about it, please view below:

Office 365 URLs and IP address ranges

Your understanding and time are highly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Betty
