Microsoft Teams: Cannot shutdown Microsoft Teams

Anonymous
2019-10-14T08:42:52+00:00

I cannot close Microsoft Teams.

After clicking "x" on the toolbar top right, Microsoft Teams close but immediately re-opens. The splash screen says "there was a glitch, and we're recovering".

After repeating hitting "x" several times, sometimes Teams stays closed, sometimes not.

I have tried to reboot and logging out/in to Teams with no success.

I am a member of my company's Teams via our tenant, also a guest member in two additional tenants.

When I click help | What's new, the text is "October 4, 2019 -  Get notified when you miss a meeting call". Therefore I assume I am on the latest version, writing this 14/10/2019.

I am running Windows 10 Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.950)

How do I cleanly shutdown Microsoft Teams?

    Hello Andrew Eryl Jones,

Thanks for your post in Microsoft Community. Regarding your issue, we would like to suggest you to close the Teams Client app from the Task manager and clear Teams cache, wait for the moment and then open your Teams client app to check the behavior.

    A. To end Task from Task manager:

    • To terminate, or close, a program in Windows 10 and Windows 8, press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keyboard combination on your keyboard to open the Windows security screen.
    • At the security screen, click on the Task Manager button.
    • Select Teams and click on the End Task button to close the app.

    B. To clear Teams cache by the below steps:

    • Fully exit the Microsoft Teams desktop client. To do this, either right click Teams from the Icon Tray and select ‘Quit’, or run Task Manager and fully kill the process.
    • Go to File Explorer, delete any of the files in the following locations:
    • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\application cache\cache
    • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\blob_storage
    • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\databases
    • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\cache
    • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\gpucache
    • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\Indexeddb
    • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\Local Storage
    • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\tmp
    • %LocalAppData%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache
    • %LocalAppData%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cookies
    • %LocalAppData%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Web Data
    • Go to IE option and remove the following two caches:
    • Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files
    • Internet Explorer Cookies

If still issue persist, try to download Teams on your desktop via https://teams.microsoft.com/downloads#allDevicesSection and check the result.

However to narrow down the issue , may I know what the type of your account? Is it an Office 365 for Business(@contoso.onmicrosoft.com) or Outlook.com account?

    Thanks and regards,

    Ankita Vaidya

    Hi @Ankita,

Many thanks for your help, the issue is fixed.

I had files at all those locations. I deleted them all and the problem re-occurred. After a re-start, the problem appears resolved (I shut down Teams cleanly three times with success).

My account is Office 365 for Business.

    Thanks again, Andy.
