Teams: Auto-update of member list in sync with O365 group mail id

I want to keep members/guests on MS Teams in-sync with O365 group mailing list membership automatically, i.e. when the membership in O365 group changes, MS Teams should update accordingly. It would allow us in streamlining our communication and collaboration further.

At present, I am able to add team members to Teams via O365 group mail id. However, when I add group mail id, the list expands to individual membership and any further update via the group mail id does not seem to be possible as the group id ceases to exist in Teams.

Can anyone help me in achieving auto-update of member list in sync with O365 group mail id?

Regards,

Saurav

Hi Saurav,

As far as I know, Teams does sync membership with Office 365 group. If you remove a member from Teams client, this change will be immediately synced to Office 365 group. However, if you remove the members outside of Teams client, it can take up 2 hours to reflect the changes in Teams.

For your reference, see Office 365 Groups and Microsoft Teams. In this scenario, if you'd like to sync membership as soon as possible, you can remove the members in Teams client.

Feel free to let me know if you have further questions.

Regards,

Marvin

Thanks, Marvin. Can you please help me with the following questions?

    1. Are both the group types i.e. @ad.mathworks.com and @groups.mathworks.com treated in same fashion by Teams?
    2. Would we have Teams for @ad.mathworks.com groups?

May be, the answers are implicit. But due to my limited understanding on office tenants/azure active directory etc., I require bit more help.

    Regards,

    Saurav

    Hi Saurav,

The answer is no. Each team or group is a single and standalone object in Office 365 tenant (more accurately, Azure Active Directory). And each team has a corresponding Office 365 group. Group ABC syncs with team ABC, while group XYZ only syncs with team XYZ. That's how Office 365 group and teams work.

    Regards,

    Marvin

Thanks for your reply and follow-up, Marvin! Your response is helpful. However, I require few more clarifications.

Skype for Business and Microsoft Teams currently coexist in our case. The O365 groups (which I referred to in my last message) were created before we started with Teams, e.g.  Group.XYZ……@ad.mathworks.com. I do not own those groups.

I created my Teams using '.... from the Scratch' option where I added individual members. Then I added additional members through 'Group.XYZ……@ad.mathworks.com'. Now I want to leverage the 'Group.XYZ……@ad.mathworks.com' in maintaining my Teams. Would that be possible?

If I choose to create my Teams using 'Create from... an existing O365 group or team', I do not get the Group.XYZ……@ad.mathworks.com. Only Group.ABC…...@groups.mathworks.com which I own appear there.

The new groups that I create now (as an O365 user) comes with mail-ids like Group.ABC…...@groups.mathworks.com. As expected,I become the owner for these Teams and able to assign additional owners.

Does Teams treat both these groups in exactly the same way? If not, what are the differences that I need to be aware of as a Team owner?

Would really appreciate any help regarding the above queries,

    Regards,

    Saurav
