How do change a channel in TEAMS from Private to Standard?

Hello Community,

I added a channel in TEAMS and created it as private - only accessible to specific people within the team. I know it took because when i see the channel listed there is a little lock symbol. I'd like to change that setting to standard - accessible to everyone on the team. Not seeing a way to do this. Help!

Sincerely,

Vanessa

Hello Vanessa,

According to my knowledge, the option to change Standard/Private channels is not available for the existing channels. You need to re-create new Standard/Private channels as a workaround.

Regarding to this feature, it is highly recommended to create a new vote in the Microsoft Teams UserVoice forum for feedback. Microsoft always pays high values on customer’s feedback and will develop new features based on the most voted ideas.

Your understanding and cooperation would be highly appreciated.

Regards,

Rick

Worked with support and found a work around.

Microsoft has a 30 day hold on Channel names after they are deleted.

We could only do this because didn't have any information at jeopardy so double check before you do this. We restored the standard channel and then renamed it to something else. Then delete the newly named standard channel. Create a new private channel using the original name you wanted.

Again, not sure what information on the back end could be impacted.

Hi, Is there a way to avoid re-creating a new channel now that it is 2020?

    Hello, Rick

Just a quick scan through the Microsoft Teams UserVoice  shows several entries regarding this same question/request/issue.  How does Microsoft gather and total the number of votes when the topic is found in multiple entries?

    Regards,

    Tonia

i wanted to delete the private channel i created, though when creating a new non-private channel with same name, it does not allow indicating that channel exists already.  can channels be deleted deleted so I can create a new channel with the same name?
