Using a Kinect in Teams

Due to COVID-19, I am forced to work from home like many others.  Unfortunately that meaning to scramble to produce a workable videoconference system. Right now I am using my Kinect 360, which I got to work in Skype via KinectCam.  That being said, my work uses Microsoft Teams not Skype.  Is there an add-on for Teams that will let me do that.  If not can it be easily created using the Kinect SDK.

Thank you.

I've found two options that work in teams (although not very well). OpenNi 2 Virtual Webcam version 0.9.5 and OBS with OBS-VirtualCam 2.0.4 plugin installed. In both cases, you are basically creating a virtual webcam which shows up in the list of MS Teams meeting cameras. With OpenNI 2, you just have to have the program running and the virtual webcam will show up. It's grainy though. And, I can't figure out how to uninstall it. OBS is a little tougher. Here is what I had to do to make it work. Install the Kinect Studio 1.8. Then open the Color Basics app from the Kinect developer toolkit browser (or some other app if you want to do a depth image, IR image, or other weird thing) . Back in OBS, add a windows capture source. You can pick the Color Basics screen. Then you can center it how you want in OBS. Then, go to tools -->virtual cam-->start. Now, OBS-Camera should show up in your Teams list of cameras. You may have to restart Teams. It's working for me.

[Edit] Even better, use the Kinect Explorer app with OBS. Then you can control the camera angle, color settings, depth camera, IR camera, skeleton, etc.

    Dear Kind Virtual Person,

I am trying to help my wife do her job better from home and I have gotten all her Microsoft 360 goodies and apps onto the ipad Pro but i was wondering, and this thread continued my wonderment— is there a way to use that Kinect Camera with Teams so she can access info with the ipad whilst using the big tv and Kinect with Teams?  Also Zoom app?  Who knows, i may be fishing on that last request.  I couldn’t tell what was going on in the last thread.  I have a feeling it involves installing or updating drivers to the kinect to make it compatible but since this is a Microsoft product that exists now, and Microsoft Teams is important now— is there any way that updates to drivers could be given as an option via the console?

Seems like it could be helpful if we are in this for the long haul, and otherwise that Kinect device is just gonna keep gathering dust in the bottom of the furniture below the T.V.

    ANY HELP IS MOST APPRECIATED!

    DREW

Dear Kind Virtual Person...is there a way to use that Kinect Camera with Teams so she can access info with the ipad whilst using the big tv and Kinect with Teams?

Yes. OpenNi 2 Virtual Webcam version 0.9.5 or OBS with OBS-VirtualCam 2.0.4 plugin installed will work with Microsoft teams and the Kinect 360. You have to keep a virtual camera up in the background, but it's not too bad. See detailed instructions above.

     Also Zoom app?

Kinectcam.ax solution appearing all over the internet works great with zoom. And no virtual camera needed.

    George,

    You mean this link:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/kinect-dk/sensor-sdk-download

I will install it.  It comes with Drivers and firmware enhancements. If it works, then all is good. If not, I will have a look at source for kinectcam.ax and tweak it for azure.  If you know or anyone else knows the github account for kinectcam, I could place a feature request there as well.

    Thanks.

    Hi J Hill,

    Thank you for the request.

Seems there is rare information about the Azure Kinect DK integration with Teams, the Kinect DK give a unique camera vision and speech models, it combines an advanced depth sensor and spatial microphone array with a video camera and orientation sensor which should be works with Teams input audio and video device.

In addition, we also recommend for this question, you could post at https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/support/community/ and seeking for more professional helps in terms of the developing issue and SDK related issues.

Appreciate again for the patience and cooperation.

    Kind Regards,

    George
