Additional features, settings, or issues not covered by specific Microsoft Teams categories
Hi #aj,
The shared files in Teams chat are uploaded to the file owner’s OneDrive for Business. There’s no delete button directly in Teams UI. We know that if there’s a delete button in Teams UI will be better. Many members have also mentioned this in our UserVoice. You can vote this one: Delete files shared in chat to show more impacts. The related team often take useful and popular ideas there. Your voice is always important to us. And we will try to make our products and services better for you and others.
To delete the shared file in Teams chat, the workaround will require further 2 steps. You can check the steps below:
1. Delete the Teams message including the shared file. This will only make the shared file disappear from the Teams chat “Files” tab. However, the shared file is still stay in the OneDrive for Business. And the most important thing is, any shared users still have access to this file.
2. Let the file owner go to his OneDrive for Business, there’s a folder named “Microsoft Teams Chat Files”. Delete the shared file here in OneDrive for Business, then the file will be deleted, and the shared user can’t access it.
Note: If you only do step 2 without deleting Teams message (step1), the shared file will still show up under Teams chat “Files” tab. But the shared user will get error message (something like, can’t access because the file may be deleted or moved) when he tries to access it. So, to delete the file and access permission, we suggest you do both steps.
Regards,
Rena
