Cursor Moves Two Spaces to the Right Upon Pressing "Enter" in Word 2016.

Hello,

I am using Word 2016, noting the following:

  • a fully-up-to-date version of Office 365
  • a fully-up-to-date version of Windows 10
  • a fully-up-to-date laptop.

This means everything is as it should be.

In my attempts to use Word 2016, when I press "Enter"  the cursor moves two spaces to the right.  The cursor does NOT move to the next line as I have become accustomed in using various versions of Word for 25 years.

As I author this post, upon pressing "Enter", the cursor moves down.  In every other software package on my laptop, the cursor moves down to the next line when it is to do so upon pressing "Enter".

Therefore, I have a MS Word 2016 problem.

I do NOT have a problem with:

  • out-of-date software
  • out-of-date drivers
  • my ISP
  • a third party
  • the man-in-the-moon
  • some other 3rd party as castigated by Microsoft for this failure.

How do I fix this Microsoft code problem?  Word 2016 is WORTHLESSwith the inability to type correctly.

Please note that I authored this post using my keyboard with absolutely not problems.

I cannot author this post in MS Word 2016 with the same ease.  THEREFORE, this IS a Microsoft code problem.  I need a solution for this Microsoft code problem, yet another Microsoft Office 365 problem that I am forced to solve first thing in the morning, rather than use this software.

Hello and Thank You For the Fast Response!

Following your directions, Words responds as expected in safe mode

    A bit more:

    • upon pressing "Enter", the cursor jumps to the right
    • pressing "Enter" again, the cursor moves down one line and one space to the right
    • upon typing, the cursor jumps down one more line to the left most position ready to type

If you start Word in Safe mode, do you still see the problem? Here's how to do it: Exit Word if it is currently running. Hold the Ctrl key as you restart Word and click yes when asked about Safe mode. Create a new, blank document by pressing Ctrl+N. See what happens as you type.

Since Safe mode works, the problem is with the Normal template, an add-in, or corrupt registry entries. The last possibility is the most unlikely one. I suggest that you exit Word and rename Normal.dotm. When you restart Word, see if everything is working properly.
