Teams showing external contacts as offline in a trusted domain using teams and SfB

Hi,

Hope someone can help. The scenario is...

We have two domains that trust each other and both have their own tenant. One is a fresh setup (Domain A) so only has Teams with no coexistence. The other domain (Domain B) has SfB and recently has Teams configured in Island mode as we are still in the transition period to fully go Teams only.

Problem...

In domain A, we search for the external contact in Domain B and we see the contact is offline so we are not able to message or call the external contact. I noticed that this happens when my SfB is logged out. When I log in to both Teams and SfB then in Domain A Teams will show the status of SfB. Domain A can message external contact but the message pops up in both Teams and SfB.

Some people said that SfB status takes precedence over Teams but if Domain A only communicates over Teams protocols why would it be so bothered about SfB in Domain B, surely it will only see that Domain B Teams status is online and that's all it needs to know?

Also I'm wondering that if the above is actually true that SfB status rules in the setup I have, then is there a way to use some kind of PS script to force Teams in Domain A to only check the Teams status in Domain B? maybe some workaround until we migrate Domain B to Teams only?

Appreciate any help!

    Hi ChiLIu,

Glad to assist you sir also appreciate for the detail information and your requirement, the below information should answer your questions:

When you have a situation where some of your users are using the Teams client and others are still using the Skype for Business client, you may have a number of users who are using both clients. You still want presence states to be shared with all users without regard to what client an individual user has. When this is shared across the organization, users can better determine whether it's appropriate to initiate a chat or make a call.

For example, if an originator's chat or call should land on the target's Skype for Business client, then it's the Skype for Business client's presence that should be shown to the originator. If it should land on the target's Teams client, then it's the Teams client's presence that should be shown.

In order to know what behavior to expect, you'll need to understand that Presence is shared based on a user's coexistence mode:

If a user is in Islands (or Legacy) mode, presence in Teams and presence in Skype for Business are independent (the values need not match) and other users will see one or the other presence of the Islands user, depending on whether they are in the same tenant or in a federated tenant and which client they use

    • From Teams, any other user within the same tenant will see the Islands user's Teams presence; this is aligned with the in-tenant routing table above
    • From Teams, any other user in a federated tenant will see the Islands user's Skype for Business presence; this is aligned with the federated routing table above
    • From Skype for Business, any other user will see the Islands user's Skype for Business presence (both in-tenant and federated); this is aligned with the routing tables above

**Some people said that SfB status takes precedence over Teams,**yes, that is true for your scenario and you are currently domain trust with each other , and the other side users are currently using Island mode, the skype for business presence will take over the teams.

So our recommendation is for the other side of users, they may either using Teams-only mode, or keeping both teams and SFB online mode.

    Kind Regards,
