Microsoft Teams away status time

Hello,

Microsoft Teams status changes to "Away" after 5 minutes unless you are actively using the program.  This status can make employees appear "Away" even though they are simply working within a different application and running Teams in the background does not help.

This is a known frustration with users.  Does Microsoft plan to add update this feature anytime in the foreseeable future? So far Microsoft has only offered workarounds, which are not adequate nor do they meet the customers' expectations.

    Here’s a good work around:

Go to the calendar page and click the “Meet Now” button without audio and no other participants join now. Your status is updated to “In a Call” Then tab over to my profile and set your status to “Available” instead. As long as you are in your "imaginary" call your computer won’t idle and Teams won’t change your status and your status will be Available until you leave the "Imaginary" meeting.

I tested this and it works perfectly!

    Hi Natilly07,

Thanks for your post on the community forum. I'm Nik, an independent advisor here to assist you with this.

By design, your current presence state changes to Away when you lock your computer or when it enters idle or sleep mode when no activity on the screen.

However, In Teams, you could set the status manually and set the expiration as described here:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams...

Given the situation, If you have any suggestion on this, please send your feedback to the Microsoft product group by submitting your suggestion to Microsoft Teams UserVoice here:

    https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com

Rest assured that Microsoft monitors and reviews each customer's feedback and ideas; some features would be added to the product and services based on customer feedback in the future. At the same time, Microsoft can’t guarantee any specific features or timelines but promise to read and consider all suggestions as feasible.

Please be advised that this is a Microsoft public peer-to-peer forum. I'm a fellow community advisor(not Microsoft) to help other community members with their issue.

    Thanks for your understanding.

    Regards

    Nik

This doesn't even come close to answering the question. Microsoft Teams is a substandard product. Skype for Business was preposterously better. MS Teams need significant upgrades. It's complete garbage like all new Microsoft products. It will remain garbage for years with some of the flaws fixed, but it will remain substandard just like Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word have for two decades. Their ubiquity is solely due to Microsoft's monopoly market share in the PC OS space and a case-in-point demonstration of the terrible disaster that are all monopoly or quasi-monopoly business endeavors. Microsoft, like it's thieving crook founder, will remain substandard.

What this requires is an option to select if you would want to change the status automatically or not (and how long it would take to change).

Creepy enough, on a personal account this doesn't happen, only if you are using a professional account. Which means that "no auto away" is already a thing in teams if you are not using a professional account. it is kind of telling what the motivation for this is.

But here's the worse part, there are laws that prevents employers from monitoring employee activities. A skilled attorney could argue that the away status is a form of activity, and that such an automatic system unwittingly or otherwise could be used to track the users activity and would be therefore illegal. Plus given that this is already not a feature on private accounts, its existence on professional ones demonstrates intent.

There's a potential law suit to be had here.

But don't take my advice, I'm not a lawyer.

FYI this does not work for us. Teams still goes to away, even though it knows (red status) I am in a (ZOOM) meeting according to my calendar. It still sets my teams status to away (yellow/amber)
