Background Effects for Microsoft Teams

Hello,

For the past 2 weeks, I have had major problems with background effects on Microsoft Teams. I cannot see the "apply background effects" button in More Actions(the 3 dots). I need background effects for my school classes. Also, on the first week of school, background effects worked, but I could only see the images that came with teams, meaning I couldn't add my own custom background. How do I fix this issue? I need it for school soon. Thank you.

    Hi Minu_LWSD,

To look further in this, may I know have you joined a scheduled meeting or a screen sharing session to look for backgroud effects?

Are you using Teams through optimized virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) or have you switched your device recently?

You could you please check if the following files availabe in %AppData%\Microsoft\Teams:

    desktop-config.json

    settings.json

    storage.json

Please note that background effect availability depends on systems hardware capability. So, please check out Hardware requirements for Microsoft Teams:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams...

The optional Background video effects are not supported on processors without an AVX2 instruction set running on Windows 8.1 or below.

    Regards

    Nik

    Hi Nik,

I tried everything you listed, including using the web version, but I still don't have background effects. Any more suggestions?

    Hi Minu_Lwsd,

I'm Nik, an independent advisor here to assist you with this issue.

I would suggest you follow the below basic troubleshooting to avoid common issues due to app cache:

    1. Manually restart the app by right-clicking the icon in your dock (Mac) or taskbar (Windows) and selecting Quit. After you quit, click the app icon to open it again.
    2. Go to File Explorer, delete any of the files in the following locations:
      • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\application cache\cache
      • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\blob_storage
      • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\databases
      • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\cache
      • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\gpucache
      • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\Indexeddb
      • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\Local Storage
      • %AppData%\Microsoft\teams\tmp
      • %LocalAppData%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache
      • %LocalAppData%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cookies
      • %LocalAppData%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Web Data
    3. Clear browser cache and cookies:
For edge - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10607/... (Clear cookies for All time)
      For IE - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17438/...

Please try access teams app and check if you see the background effects.

    If you still issue,
Please try accessing teams web app https://teams.Microsoft.com in browser and open with “Use in web instead”. If you see background effects option in web app then it will help to isolate issue with desktop app.

    Regards
    Nik
