OneNote Content Library

We are using Teams and OneNote for remote learning but I have a problem.

I have placed some documents into the "Content Library" of a Class Notebook but the students can edit those documents in situ, I thought they couldn't do this in the content library?

I have tried making another notebook read only and sharing that with them and they can edit any content in that one too, what's going on here?

    Hi Hart,

Thanks for using Microsoft products and posting in the community, I'm glad to offer help.

According to Getting Started with the OneNote Class Notebook: A Walkthrough for Teachers, we can see that the "Content Library" section is editable for teachers, and it is read-only for students by default.

However, in your case, the students can edit the content in the "Content Library" section, please go to Teams> "Files" tab > click "Open in SharePoint" to open the team site > go to "Site contents" > open "Sites Assets" folder > search for "_content library" > select the "_ C ontent L ibrary"folder > click "Manageaccess" in the details pane > change the permissions of the student to "Can view".

Hope the above suggestion can be helpful, and please feel free to let me know if there is any progress, I'll continue to help you.

    Best Regards,

    Arck

    Hi Hart,

Thanks for the clarification, since the group that the students are in has the "Owner" permission, they will have the rights to edit the notebook. Thus, please click the "Advanced" button in the lower right corner of the "Manage Access" pane, then change the permission of this group to "Read" or removing the permission of this group directly.

Besides, since every notebook is stored in OneDrive/SharePoint, manage them in where they are stored is the most direct and effective way, and there is no such way within OneNote.

    Best Regards,

    Arck

Am I reading this correctly, you cannot granularly control permissions on who can edit/view a Cloud based educational tool that we are encouraged to share?

I have tried the "Advanced" option but the "TS Students" group does not appear there. However the non advanced section if I hover over the TS Students entry it actually says

"TS Students - 17 Physics Grp X Owners"

So isn't that the permissions for the owners of the Group, not the members of the Group?

I have blanked out actual names.

    Thanks for that

This is what I see. purple is myself, and green the students. It looks like they only have view only access but the group that they are in "TStudents - 17 Physics ..."* has Owner Access. Are they getting edit access from there? Have the Groups been setup incorrectly?

Also can I manage user access in a similar way from within OneNote directly (I have a couple of OneNote Notebooks I would like to manage access to as well.

*Don't ask. The name is so long before it gets to something relevant that you cannot select the group you want in some dialog boxes as the relevant info is hidden...
