Are my “muted” calls still listening and recording?

I’ve been using teams very often for college work, and with the new ios 14 update, on the top right of screen it shows an orange dots to show your mic is being recorded. I have myself on mute when im not talking (i know its on mute because sometimes I’ve spoken, forgetting I muted it and the tutor didn’t hear me). However, the orange dot did not disappear. When on phone calls, outside of team, whenever I mute myself the dot disappears immediatly. Does teams, the program not teacher, listen in, even when on mute? It’s making me uncomfortable with a lot of questions.

    Hi Holly,

I'm Nik, an independent advisor here to assist you with this.

When your microphone is off, no one can hear you, including MS teams.

    Regards

    Nik

I’m not sure if you’re aware but the ios 14 update on iphone is specifically included to make people aware of when their microphones are in use for safety reasons, but in phone calls and facetime if the mic is muted it disappears. Its a similar concept with the green dot which appears when the camera is activated, as soon as your camera is no longer currently in use the dot disappears. Also, when ive got my earphones in and I cover the attached mic with my finger i can literally hear it in my ears. This happens with no other form of calls or video chat i have ever used. If they mic isn’t being currently used the update would make the dot disappear. I know when im on mute none of my tutors or peers can hear me, which makes me curious on who/what can. I understand people may think this sounds silly, but if my phone is telling me every time i use this app that my microphone is in use and possibly being recorded I’ll belive it as it happens with no other apps whatsoever

I'm a student, using Microsoft Teams- when my microphone is muted and I am quiet- I have no MT notifications, however, if I begin talking- with my microphone still off- a message at the top of my screen, from MT, will say 'Your microphone is muted'. I appreciate the reminder- but how does the app know that I am talking, when I have no microphone enabled at that time. It's creepy and  makes me uncomfortable, and to be honest- nothing you could say would make me feel any better about this because it is absolutely evident that the app is always listening to you, at least when you are on a call, sort of like Alexa.

MT also listens on you in the desktop app and the browser versions,

whenever the mic detects volume teams will tell you that your microphone is muted,

    very creepy imo,

    Microsoft should fix this.
