As a company, we already use Teams to discuss projects etc. We have internal clubs eg. running club and would like to know which platform is best to use for this, Teams Channel or Yammer (still integrated within Teams app)?

Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Teams for business | Chats | Group chats

Hi suzannethomson2, hope you're doing well. I’m Ian, and I’m happy to help you today.

It really depends on what you need for a specific organization.

Yammer is meant to be used as an enterprise social network with messaging capabilities. Teams is a powerful communication and collaboration platform aimed at small teams within the same organization. It offers a one-to-many type of communication. That’s because everything that you post can be seen by everyone in your organization’s Yammer. It may have one-to-one messaging, but its features make it negligible.

The focus of Microsoft Teams is to help teams communicate easily and make collaboration seamless. It is perfect for both one-to-many and one-to-one communications. As part of a team’s channel, you can participate in a large group chat and even have video and audio calls with the whole team. The one-to-one communication feature is as robust as the channel-type communication.

For me, you should use Teams for serious collaboration needs and when you are dealing with sensitive information.

Use Yammer for organization wide communication.

This is a user-to-user support forum and I am a fellow user.

I hope this helps, but please let me know if you need anything else.
