How to stop Microsoft Teams plugin for Outlook from reinstalling itself?

Microsoft Teams has a plugin for Microsoft Outlook. The plugin always causes Outlook to load slowly so Outlook usually disables it on boot. Then, when Microsoft Teams notices that the plugin is disabled, it will install a new instance of the plugin. At one time I found 7 separate instances of the Microsoft Teams plugin for Outlook disabled in Outlook. Teams installs, Outlook disables, Teams installs again.

I would be satisfied with a way to opt-out of the Teams plugin for Outlook. Please let me know!

Thank you,

Luke

In a quickie test, the key seems to work. I probably won't know for sure for a couple of days though.

After setting the key, you need to quit teams, restart Outlook then restart Teams - and if the path doesn't exist in the registry, you need to create it

This is what I used -

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\outlook\resiliency\addinlist

    DWORD: TeamsAddin.FastConnect

    Value: 0

If you don't want to edit the registry, I have a read-to-use reg key for the Office 16.0 version (Office 2016 and newer)

    Hi Igor,

Thank you for your prompt response! I have attempted what you have suggested however the box is already unchecked, as Outlook has already disabled the plugin (after which it will stay disabled until Teams attempts to reinstall). I suspect the issue is that Teams is programmed to verify whether or not the plugin has been installed, and on boot it queries the install location and when it gets no response it attempts an install. After installing the plugin instance, the next time I boot Outlook it gets disabled due to slowing down Outlook's boot.

    Curious to hear your thoughts.

    Regards,

    Luke

    Hello, Luke

I am Igor and I will be glad to help you with this question :)

    Please try:

In Outlook, choose File and then Options.

Select the Add-ins tab of Outlook Options dialog box.

Confirm that Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office is listed in the Active Application Add-ins list

If the Teams Meeting Add-in is listed in the Disabled Application Add-ins list, select COM Add-ins in Manage and then select Go…

Set the checkbox next to Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office. and uncheck it

Choose OK on all dialog boxes and restart Outlook.

I'm Diane, an Office Apps & Services MVP specializing in Outlook.

You could try adding a registry key to block it from loading - you'd set the value to 0 to keep it from loading. It sets a policy key, so Teams shouldn't override it but I haven't tested it (yet... will do that next).
