When does MS Teams "reset" your presence status?

Hi,

At my work we are just starting to transition to using MS Teams from SFB, and through some trouble-shooting of the presence statuses I had a question regarding how MS Teams tracks your 'away time'.

If I set myself to Away, I don't see how long I've been away for - whether 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, etc. Like I would on SFB.

For others, I can see how long they've been away for. For example, a colleague of mine was set to away and under their presence status it would say something like '27 minutes' - and then I notice it will suddenly change to 'Just now', followed by 'A moment ago', followed by 'x minutes' while still keeping the Away status.

My question is how does MS Teams track this? Does it start counting the minutes you've been away for based on your mouse/keyboard activity or is it just if you have MS Teams minimized or in the background? And if so, is it so that whenever you move your mouse or touch something on your keyboard, the minutes reset?

Microsoft Teams will update your status based on your calendar availability as well as your activity.

Unfortunately, there are very few settings you can use to customize this behaviour.

As an alternative solution, try setting the "Show As" field in your all-day calendar event to "Free".

In theory, Teams will then report you as "Available' because your calendar event says so.

    Hi,

    I understand,
As of today, it is a default behaviour as per product design that when a user set presence status manually then to reset presence status either user needs to set it back to Available status or wait for default expiration period as mentioned in the earlier conversations.

If you have any suggestions to this feature, I invite you participate in Microsoft officials UserVoice forum to submit your suggestions and feedback:

Thanks for your understanding and patience!

    Regards
    Nik

    Hi,

I'm Nik, an independent advisor here to assist you with this.

The presence of Teams, most of the time updates to be reflected in a matter of a few seconds. It’s true for all scenarios like user’s calendar update, the Teams app status, or what the user decides to set manually.

User presence status changes based on user activity, it includes any activity like mouse movement, and keystrokes.

Please note that if you set presence status manually then you would need to either click on "Reset status" or set it back to Available to sync with automatic presence status.

    Also,
User configured states have default expiration settings in Teams, in order to prevent users from displaying a status that may not be relevant after a period of time.
Busy - default expires after 1 day
Do not disturb- default expires after 1 day
Other status(Away, busy) - default expires after 7 days

As mentioned earlier, if someone set presence status manually then they will need to reset status manually back to available to sync with MS teams.
