How can we create shortcuts to folders in Teams?

Hi!

We are currently in the process of migrating to Teams. Since we can use a lot of nice features like posts and planner in Teams, we would like to ask everyone to start using Teams as their startup point for the day.

However we have some teams that have quite some extensive folder structures.

Is there a possibility to specifically create shortcuts for yourself in Teams to a specific folder in one of your teams environments?

I know there is the possibility to use the "add shortcut to onedrive" option.

However, this option doens't show under the "files" option in the menu bar on the left in Teams. Only if you open onedrive from the files tab and then go to "open in onedrive" to open the webbrowser version, you will see the shortcuts.

This is not preferred, since we would like to go to these shortcuts directly in teams.

Is this a bug or a feature that is just not created yet?

    Hi Joanna,

    Thanks for notifying!

It seems in the Microsoft support page indeed that the shortcut should be available in Teams.

Based on this message: These shortcuts appear in OneDrive on the web, Windows File Explorer, Mac Finder, Teams, and in the OneDrive mobile apps.

However, the shortcuts do not show up in Teams. Not in the desktop app and not in the web browser version of teams.

Any idea why this might be? Is this a bug in Teams?

    Hi Joanna,

    Thanks for the options!

Unfortunately this is not the option we are looking for.

We would like to have this shortcut visible in the Teams application directly. We do not want to go to a browser version.

Is there a possibility for this?

    Hi Joanna,

    Thanks for reaching out!

Unfortunately this is not visible for us from the Teams view.

If we do however go to Teams --> files --> onedrive --> then select "open in onedrive", we can see the shortcut in the webbrowser version of Onedrive.

If I have it opened in the webbrowser version I see this icon, which shows me that there is a shortcut to the folder in Teams.

However, I do not see the same in my Teams view. There this "general" folder with the infinity icon that shows it is a link to a place in Teams is not showing.

Is there something we can do to make the shortcuts visible in Teams?

    Hi Ilona,

You may try this steps below.

    Option 1:

    1. go to the Files tab of the Team for the file you wish to create a shortcut to.
    2. click the Show actions dots [...] for the file
    3. click Open >
    4. click Open in browser
    5. If your file opens in Edge

a.. click the Edge browser options dots [...]

    b.. click Apps

    c. click Install this site as an app

    d. either use the default name, or edit to create your preferred file name

    click [Install]

e.. wait for the file to open

    f. select your choices for "Allow this app to"

    click [Allow]

If your file opens in Chrome

    1. click the Chrome browser options dots thumbnail image 1 of blog post titled
    2. click More tools >
    3. click Create shortcut...
    4. either use the default name, or edit to create your preferred file name
    5. Chrome has an option to "Open as window"
    6. Select/check the box will cause the file to open in an "Excel" window
    7. Leaving the box unchecked will cause the file to open in a Chrome browser window
    8. You should now have a shortcut directly to the file.

    Option 2:

open in SharePoint. Then if you have onedrive setup you can utilize the add to onedrive / my files link for the channel. This will add a link with the files In your onedrive folder synced to your computer which you can then create a desktop shortcut for those files.

    Hi Ilona,

When someone shares a folder in Microsoft OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams, you can add a shortcut to the shared folder in your OneDrive to easily find and work with the files. These shortcuts appear in OneDrive on the web, Windows File Explorer, Mac Finder, Teams, and in the OneDrive mobile apps.

You may try the steps below:

    1. In OneDrive, in the navigation pane, select Shared > Shared with me.
    2. Find the folder you want to add, and click the circle in the folder's tile to select it.
    3. Select Add shortcut to My files.
    4. Or you can right-click the folder, and then select Add shortcut to My files.
    5. In a shared library in SharePoint or Microsoft Teams, you can select Add shortcut to My files to add a shortcut to the entire library or select the specific folder you want to add, and then select Add shortcut to My files.

Note: The Add shortcut to My files option isn't available when:

You've already added the folder to your OneDrive, or you have more than one folder selected. (You can't add multiple folders at the same time.)

The item you're trying to add isn't a folder. (Add shortcut to My files isn't available for individual files or for collections of files such as albums.)

You may refer to the link below for further information.

Please let me know if this doesn't work or if you need further assistance.

    Thank you.
