Teams on Citrix

For better or worse (currently worse), my company has switched to Teams. Working from home, I log in to a Citrix VPN and access a Windows 10 VM using Citrix MyPC (using a .ica file). Teams shows it is Citrix HDX optimized. This looks/operates differently than accessing on laptop/desktop (or even the VM through RDP).

1- I've been having issues with dropped phone audio, and the only way we have found to reconnect in the HDX version is to leave the meeting, then join again. When not using HDX version, I can access the menu to have it call me back.

2- With HDX, I can not have chat and meeting in separate windows. In non-HDX, that works fine

My IT department had me switch to the ica connection from RDP because RDP would disconnect me after being idle for 2 minutes. We tried all kinds of registry settings to prevent the idle timeout, but none worked. Using ica fixed that...

Is there a way to force Teams to use the non-HDX version? I'm not really sure what the point of it is - I see no performance improvements using HDX optimized...

    Hello Todd,

The main reason for optimization is that without it, the media must “hairpin” from your client to the server in the data center and then back to the endpoint. This additional traffic can put significant load on the server (especially for video) and can cause delay and an overall degraded experience, especially if the other party in a Teams call is originating from a user in a similar virtualized experience.

Teams optimization is enabled when the Microsoft Teams redirection Studio policy is set to Allowed. The policy is enabled by default. In addition, HDX checks to verify that the version of Citrix Workspace app is equal to or greater than the minimum required version. If both conditions are met, the following registry key is set to 1 on the VDA. The Microsoft Teams application reads the key to load in VDI mode.

    Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Citrix\HDXMediaStream

    Name: MSTeamsRedirSupport

    Value: DWORD (1 - on, 0 - off)

Please see PoC Guide: Microsoft Teams optimization in Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops environments for more info.

I have Microsoft Teams Version 1.5.00.21668 (64-bit). Citrix HDX Optimized. It was last updated on 8/26/22.

My concern is that the Citrix HDX Optimized version does not work the same.

What I want to do is not run the HDX optimized version when using Citrix so that is functions the same as local. It seems to offer less features - what is the HDX optimization giving me?

    Hello Todd,

    Thank you for your response.

In reference to doc: Optimization for Microsoft Teams | Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 7 2206,

For remote PC access, when you roam from a local session to an HDX session and if Microsoft Teams is kept open and running on the background, you must exit and relaunch Microsoft Teams to optimize with HDX correctly. Conversely, if you use Microsoft Teams remotely via an optimized HDX session, you need to disconnect the HDX session and reconnect to the same Windows session locally at the device. When working from the office, you must relaunch Microsoft Teams so it can correctly detect the remote PC state (HDX or local). Because Microsoft Teams can only assess VDI mode at app launch time, and not while it is already running on the background. Without a restart, Microsoft Teams might fail to load features like pop out Windows, Breakout Rooms, or meeting reactions.

Please let us know if this answers your query.

    Hello Todd,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

Based on your description, I understand that you have a concern where you do not have chat and meeting in separate windows in the Citrix HDX version.

Please make sure you are running the latest teams app version. According to Teams on Citrix - Microsoft Community, as of 6/3/2022: MultiWindow (a.k.a pop-out chat/new meeting experience) was enabled in Ring 4 (GA). CWA for Windows 2112.1 or higher, CWA for Linux/Mac 2203 or higher, VDA 2112 or higher and Teams 1.5.00.11865 or higher required. A Teams sign out/sign in and restart will be required.

If you meet these requirements, we recommend you get in touch with our phone support team for further assistance. To do so please visit Global Customer Service phone numbers (microsoft.com). As the office 365 online support team have limited access permission / resources to check certain detailed situation about your mentioned scenario.

Please collect Teams Web client logs with the key combination Ctrl + Alt + Shift + 1 after reproducing the issue as these might be needed for further analysis. Logs will be written to %userprofile%\Downloads\MSTeams Diagnostics Log DATE_TIME.txt on the host VM.

    Your understanding is highly appreciated.

    Sincerely,
