Hello Esther,
I'm Ibhadighi and I'd happily help you with your question. In this forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself.
When using editable PDFs as assignments in Microsoft Teams for Education, the functionality for editing within Teams can be somewhat limited compared to dedicated PDF editors.
If the copy-paste functionality isn't working, it's likely due to the built-in PDF viewer/editor within Teams not supporting all the features of a full PDF editor. Similarly, the default tool selection (pen, text, eraser, etc.) is determined by the Teams app itself.
To ensure that students can type by default instead of using the pen tool, you may need to instruct students to manually select the text tool upon opening the PDF in Teams. Here are a few steps you can share with them:
- Open the assignment in Teams.
- Look for the toolbar that appears with the PDF (usually at the top or bottom of the interface).
- Click on the text tool (often represented by a "T" or text box icon) to select it.
- Click on the area in the PDF where they want to start typing.
Currently, there is no setting within Teams that allows you to change the default tool selection for all students automatically; they will have to change it manually each time they open the document.
For more advanced editing capabilities, students may need to download the PDF and open it in a dedicated PDF editor, then re-upload the completed file to Teams. However, this is less integrated and might not be the solution you're looking for.
If these limitations are a significant issue for your use case, you might want to provide feedback to Microsoft through the Teams feedback tool or https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/send-feedback-to-microsoft-with-the-feedback-hub-app-f59187f8-8739-22d6-ba93-f66612949332, as Microsoft regularly updates Teams with new features and improvements.
I hope this helps.
Best Regards, Ibhadighi
